Write permisson with Knoppix?

Hi!

I have done something pretty stupid, and i need to reinstall my copy of windows :shock:

Before i do that, i would like to back up a few things. Luckily i have a secondary 200gb hdd-drive i can backup on.

So! Here goes my questions:

-Can i get permission to write to my ntfs partitions on the secondary drive? I can read both of them perfectly in fasm, but read-only.

-Can i copy my outlook stored emails & settings (folders and so on). I am not used to outlook, mostly used Pegasus and thunderbird, but with my new PDA i use the sync thingy.

I know there are some experimental drivers for this, but I have never tested them. Good luck!

Well.
someone has a better idea?

Worst case would be taking out the main drive, and i don't want to do that. the other ways would be prefered!

Otherwise i could burn a DVD within knoppix!

What about the outlook data?

Use Gparted or fsdsk in Knoppix and make your backup-Disc a FAT32 Disk or a EXT2 disk.
Then copy the data from one disk to the other.

Writing NTFS in Linux is very experimental - I can not recommend it. But I have good experience with EXT2 under windows. E.G.: I access my linux root from Windows in R/W mode!

In doubt just use FAT32 - which is not that good caz of the large filesize stuff. :(

I once destroyed Windows XPs mbr and everything but I was able to fix it after some hours, what did you do? :P

You can just reinstall Windows over the old one and nothing is lost, then copy the important files over on the other hard drive and reinstall Windows again and then choose to format so there will be no mess.

And even better, why don't you just install Windows on your secondary 200gb hdd-drive?

Oh i just deleted about 70% of my windows directory. I know about the MBR stuff, and its a 10 second fix (fdisk /mbr will restore it ;) )

I am thinking of installing xp again, but i want a complete reinstallation of my system anyway, so this is a good time to do it hehe

Didn't fix mine when I had the problem, I don't remember exactly what I did but damn, all the normal trick didn't work.

there is also a new driver for ntfs called ntfs-3g, it's stable and has full write cababilitys for ntfs volumes, don't know ether it is in Knoppix though... i use grml for system rescue and I think one can install ntfs-3g on it whiel having booted from cd, you can find grml on grml.org but you shuld only use it if you have a good knowledge about Unix commandlines...

SystemRescueCd is what you want:
The Gentoo-based SystemRescueCD 0.3.3 live CD was released on March 1, sporting a spiffy new 2.6.19.2 kernel and the WMaker desktop environment. As its name implies, SystemRescueCd is a Linux system on a bootable CD-ROM that can be used for repairing a system and its data following a crash.

SystemRescueCD also aims to provide an easy way to carry out admin tasks on a computer, such as creating and editing the partitions of the hard disk.

It contains both advanced system utilities (parted, partimage, fstools, etc.) and basic ones (editors, Midnight Commander, network tools). It aims to be very easy to use: just boot from the CD-ROM, and a user can do everything, the France-based project team said in the release announcement.

The kernel of the system supports most important file systems (ext2/ext3, ReiserFS, XFS, JFS, VFAT, NTFS, ISO9660), and network ones (Samba and NFS), the team said.

Key new changes or features in v0.3.3, according to the project team, include:
updated ntfs3g to 1.0
GParted to 0.3.4
TestDisk to 6.6
Memtest+ boot disk to 1.70

Thanks for the suggestions but i did it the lazy-mans way.

I repaired my xp copy, of course its was all fucked up, missing drivers etc
I backed up everything i wanted
Now i formatted the main 200gb system disk and are just installing a fresh copy of windows :)
