Another stealth UK tax!

Post by DoubleDutch »

I really am getting sick of our government and its underhand way of sneaking things past everyone!

If your from the UK, please read and sign the petition:

There are only 15 days left to register your objection to the 'Pay as you go' road tax - which closes to petitions on the 20th February 2007.

The petition is on the 10 Downing St website but they didn't tell anybody about it.

The government's proposal to introduce road pricing will mean you having to purchase a tracking device for your car and paying a monthly bill to use it. The tracking device will cost about £200 and in a recent study by the BBC, the lowest monthly bill was £28 for a rural florist and £194 for a delivery driver. A non working mother who used the car to take the kids to school paid £86 in one month.

If you care about our freedom and stopping the constant bashing of the car driver, please sign the petition on No 10's new website:

NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION!!!

We got in to trouble with that one. This does not affect me as I live in the Great Texas Republic, quasi capitol of the USA, but American politicians have never minded borrowing a good idea to squeeze a little more money out of the average citizen...

I can see it now... "Special fee deals for the Oil Companies and ' friends of business' and 'campaign contributors'" Pork to feed the maw of the overabused budget system...

I say fight it! If you can stop it we will have a chance stopping it!

In Texas they recently installed the RED LIGHT CAMERAS and are planning SPEED ZONE CAMERAS soon...

Up the pigs! If they can't catch me they don't deserve my speed ticket money!!!

The Brits likely got this one from the USA, as California was considering similar legislation around three years ago. In the USA, it has been considered on the Federal level for the past two years.

I don't see what the stink is for folks. With the emergence of Hybrids, it is the most fair way to tax people. With so many people getting hybrid cars that use less gas, there are plenty of people out there putting wear and tear on the state and federal roads, and not paying their fair share of the state and federal gas taxes because they purchase less gas because of their vehicles.

People have no problem griping about the state of the roads, but then they don't want to pay their fair share to keep the roads in decent repair. If you have a vehicle that uses less gas, it doesn't mean that you put less wear and tear on the roads. Having a Hybrid currently allows you to NOT pay your fair share of road maint. taxes.

If you do the math on the number of Hybrids sold, how much the average person drives, how much better gas milage the average hybrid gets, and then factor in the state and federal taxes for each of those gallons of gas that aren't being bought by Hybrid owners, the money they are not paying in taxes is staggering. They should be paying the same amount of road taxes as everybody else. I don't know of any way to make it fair for everybody except taxing by the mile.

I know nothing about tax issues in the UK, or how the government takes care of roads, but the situation is probably similar there.

The British government doesn't deserve any more tax from motorists. 75% of the petrol price in the UK is already tax! I signed this petition days ago.

They should just put tax on the petrol and do away with road tax, whoever drives the most would pay the most. Anyway I'm off to sign the petition. :x

Hehe, what about this one:

If you want to make a LAN with your friends/neighbors and the person you're trying to wire with lives on the other side of the road (i mean there's a reasonable distance between), you must pay a tax for the friggin SHADOW made by the cable on the ground!

WTF is next?? Tax for air?

@Brice: correct me if I'm wrong, but you don't have the equivalent of our road fund licence (road tax) over in the states? This is on top of the extortionate amount of tax we pay at the petrol pumps.

I'd be in favour of this new tax if they first abolished the road tax and lowered the duty on fuel, but that 'aint gonna happen any time soon. :(

Now, if only someone would invent a car that ran on bullshit, I'd never need to refuel! :)

Just be grateful you don't live in Australia, where you pay GST (goods and
services tax) on petrol -- which has its own tax -- in other words, we get
taxed on a tax!

At least, If the goverment is tracking my car, I'll been the end of speed cameras as they will know when your speeding away!

I'll never be able to overtake again!

On the plus side they will also be able to tell me where to find the burnt out hulk of my car if it's stolen.

Yes, it's to sad... some years ago the Swedish Government had a suggestion to add a luxury tax for computer memory.
