VISTA bytes!
Re: VISTA bytes!
Speaking of activation, what happens if you buy a product that requires it,
such as Vista or Flight Simulator X, and you DON'T have internet access and
you DON'T have access to a phone near your PC? How would you then get
the product activated? I ask because I may be out of a job soon so both the
internet and phone may not be an option for me.

I compile using 5.31 (x86) on Win 7 Ultimate (64-bit).

I'm still on 2kpro and I think it's the best OS Mitroschwartz ever released...
I just had no reason yet to pay ~200€ for a new OS (XP).
I bought my actual machine in parts so I use the OS i bought for the prior machine to replace ME.
with vista...
I'm not pleased with what I hear about it, maybe I'll give it a try when it has SP3, maybe not.
the point I dislike most with Vista is that it seems to waste a huge amount of power for grafic firlefanz on the desktop nobody really needs. If it could be switched to a real 2k-mode, it would be better.
the only reason not to leave MS for Linux yet was the masses of games for Windows,
and a good MAC was just too expensive.
I'm really thinking about running Linux on my next PC.
I could keep an older machine running with 2k, and I own about a hundred game-CDs that all run on 2k, so it shouln't get boring too soon.

oh... and have a nice day.
Exactly, you want an operating system to look nice but not at the expense of processing power etc that could be better used actually running programs.Kaeru Gaman wrote: the point I dislike most with Vista is that it seems to waste a huge amount of power for grafic firlefanz on the desktop nobody really needs.
Well i think the idea to render the desctop on the graphics card is acutally brilliant, it even takes less processing power since the graphics card jumps in. If you have ever used Mac OS X you will also find out that it helps to bring up comfort and productivity quite a lot. However the question is do I realy need a highend graphics card for this. When you look at how the Mac guys did it you will see that their Graphics system runs somethely on embedded graphics cards, the same is true for the Linux version of a hardware rendered Dectop, XGL and even more so AIGLX do run smoethly on bot geforce 2 and higher graphics cards as well as on embedded chips, and it can be disabled without loosing much functionality. It's just the way Microsoft implemented it that makes he idea a bad idea.

I will buy Vista eventually, but it will be the cheapest version. I have no interest in Aero and I am not going to run out and buy Vista anytime soon.
Windows 95 was a must have for me, as was Windows XP due to the radical core changes in each product. Vista's security features don't interest me as my development machine is not connected to the net. The new UI doesn't really interest me. DX10 doesn't interest me since I hate 3D games. I am certainly not going to be buying a new system within the next five years. Unlike 95 and XP, there is nothing I "must have" with Vista.
Since I mainly program for my own enjoyment and one of my favorite languages is moving to Linux, Linux development may be a large part of my future.

I just visited Microsoft Vista Ready ...
Microsoft still impresses me much...
An 8Mb download, that requires MSXML 6.0 and .Net installed,
just to check your PC hardware and say "Yes you can use it" ...
Not to say that the 8Mb get's unpacked to 19Mb !!!
Only thing my PC doesn't comply is that I will require 15 Gb free,
just to install the OS on drive C: ...

15GB, what the hell is in the OS.... Maybe a couple of Free DVD movies !?!?!?

HELL NO!
I will install anything but Vista!
Now as Novell and Microsoft are together, I heard that Vista has some basic UNIX program support.. what are they up to? Replace Linux with Microsoft Winux?
I hated Bill Gates since I was born.. my mother used Mac OS X in her work and my father had always a crush on Linux (or the XXX movies he watched on it

I don't know if any of you lot caught this on the register today:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/01/29 ... not_ready/
It made me laugh. I won't be buying and i've even started dabbling with linux now because i don't like the way M$ is going. 20gig storage and 1gb+ RAM for an OS? you must be joking.

Yip. Vista is way over the top.
I think we see an OS like a mechanic looks at a car. That's wrong.
We all know that for Microsoft, Vista is not meant to be just an OS. It's logical task will be the creation of tons of money.
So, profits and politics are at number 1. (no big news)
But, in most ways this will block the road to a balanced product that will serve the needs of the consumers.
Instead of offering a service, Microsoft will try to manipulate the consumer to make them ready for the product.
It is the world upside down.
Of course this will only work when no serious competition is active on the market.
They made sure this is the case already years ago.
Is this bad?
Yes, I think it is bad for the development of computer technology in general.
Everybody has to adapt to the whishes of Microsoft and that is wrong.
Microsoft is setting the standards for everybody: consumers, partners, vendors, hardware developers, programmers etc.
They are too much in the role of ruling what technology should look like instead of maintaining a healthy correlation with
the technical world and its own end-users.
Why do you need to buy at least 1Gb of ram just to make them able to restrict you in the way you can handle your PC?
Because PC's don't exist anymore. This concept is taken over by the monstrous world of the Windows money machinery.
Gigs and gigs and gigs of wasted (bloated) bytes. We all have to be ready for Vista if we like it or not.
Is Vista crap?
Well, I don't know. I don't know if it is a bad product. I just don't like the way things are going, the way the company is
going, the philosophy it seems to follow.
If Microsoft would have the guts to launch a Windows Light version (call it 'Power Windows' for example), that can serve
the humble markets (no bloat, no security crap, no fancy stuff, just the basic engine and proper device drivers), it would
be again my big friend.
Keep Vista for the ones that love it. Nothing wrong with that.
But stop ruling the world.

You could fit approximately 43 porn movies in 20Gb.. Why waste it for a buggy OS?Kale wrote:I don't know if any of you lot caught this on the register today:

This has gone well... I work for a company called Revacomp. We make moola the old fashioned way... we support a great deal of outdated and old fashioned equipment.
Currently I am managing the Halliburton server migration. Their experiments with Vista have not been 100% successful.
Likewise GMC, Vista does not like the Xerox 5400 and 5500 lasers printers on the lines there (another contract I manage which causes headaches that you wuld not believe!)
In fairness several of our clients have switched and aside from the same problems everyone had when MS rolled out Win2k... all has been well...
At my company we use a software package called Clearview to manage service accounts. It is net based and uses many XML and ASP pages, widgets and whatnots... IE7 and Vista have NOT been kind to Clearview.
I also have to access Citrix / Great PAINS (Great Plains) to interface with Xerox so we can cover the GMC warranty maintenance contract... Vista crunked up something awful there.
But it will work itself out. Or we will switch to linux...
I read something about that on the web recently. We support WinCE because a lot of POS applications use it and Chipptle/McDonalds wanted to know if Windows XPLite would work on their systems... I didn't do the research because I have nothing to do with that account but I did get asked to help test it...Windows Light...
