Want to play with linux, how?

I just installed Virtual PC 2004 on my XP.
Wanted to play with Linux and see what i can learn about this.
Any easy suggestions?

VPC asks for a boot device so i gues i need a cdrom first.
Which distro should i download and from where?

(Hmm, i ever had ubuntu)

It's nothing serious though.

Well since Virtualk PC, only emulates the Processor it's going to be relativly slow, if you have a fast processor I ould recommend you trying VMWare Server, which you can download for free. Another posibility would be to try a LiveCD that's a Linux System running from the CD which doesn't touch your HardDrive (unless you explicitly tell it to do it). One of the most advanced LiveCDs is from a man with the same name as you and is called Knoppix. (http://knoppix.com/)
If you want to go with VMWare or Virtual PC you need to get a npormal Linuyx Distro like Ubuntu, then you must use it's .iso fiel as a CDROM in the virtual mashine, you will be able to install onot a virtual harddrive easily.

O well today i saw the bios boot passing bye in a window (suprisingly to me) and i assume a ubuntu could be booted.

Will check if i can find the cdrom or download it.

Yes i know it will be slow but frankly, i wanted to test VPC and Linux.
I already ran simulations but i don't like it (no solid opinion though).
I think VPC comes closer to my understanding of this stuff.

It's for hobby..

Ubuntu forces a poor screen raster, i can barely read.
But i set VPC to use valid screen dimensions only.
And the boot option (#2) to force safe grahics sizes is ignored.

I don't have VPC to verify but something like that never happened to me before. Which version of Ubuntu are you using? Nad which cd did you download.

ubuntu-6.10-desktop-i386.iso

I have 'connected' it directly.
I also burned it but at the end i used the iso directly.
I'm downloading knoppix.

Not sure this one has a better picture.

Note that i tried all kinds of resolutions in ubuntu on boot.
I have a wide-screen, ubuntu forces 1600x.. at some point.
Not on boot though.
And all becomes rasterized.
