Do they teach English in Japanese Scools.. In .nl for example you can ask a 12 years old for
directions in English, but the Japanese seems to be speaking, well Japanese, and that's it..

And it differs from the English education of Britain fundamentally.
Importance is one of translating instead of the talk.

I think it's very specific to certain people, whether or not they speak good English, or any at all. I could speak pretty good English before I could write Norwegian

Most Scandinavian countries, and north European countries learn English quite early in school. So anyone that is younger than 50 years tend to understand English.

However I must say that when I watch Anime I prefer the original Japanese dialogs and with English subtitles instead. I hardly understand a single word, but at least it "feel" right when watching.

They teach us pritty good english in schools here as well. I think it's also a lot easier for us Germans than for the Japanese since the languages are much more related. In English most normal words are related with the German language while more difficult words are often related with latin. Then again there are some German words, the English use because they haven't got an own word for it, for example "Kindergarten" or "Waldsterben".

btw: You can learn Japanese at our school but it's optional
You must learn another language though, so I learned French as well, it's much more difficult than English I think.

It's not strange really - apart from spoken Japanese being considerably different & difficult to pronounce for Japanese people, the TV people reading out English were probably reading it translated to English via katakana (one of the Japanese writing styles) i.e. they're not reading English sentences, they're likely to be reading Japanese script that has been written to aid their pronounication so it can be understood as English.

Not many Japanese can speak English well until they go overseas and live & work in an English-speaking country for a while.
