PureBASIC Direction?

Post by Steve Elliott »

Perhaps I'm going over old ground here - but I'll just say it one more time.

PureBASIC has cornered the market in application production. It has thread support for multi-tasking - very useful for many functions including time consuming loading of levels as Grand Theft Auto does - without waiting for sections to load. Assembly Language support - there is nothing better.

What PureBASIC needs is a direction after it's completed goals - that direction is games. If Fred is looking at priorities then this is where it should lie. Support of Windows and Mac with a priority given to optimized graphics/game related functions is my advice. Being able to write application software so easily is a great feature - being able to write every kind of software with the same quality and ease of use would be unique.

quite so... :)

Now, that is funny. I'm not into game programming at all and I really feel that it's actually the other way around. Fred and his team must be doing something right if they manage to cover middle ground this well....;)

Keep up the good work, Fred - à donf!
cheers,

Yes, but shows that a lot of us customers are really involved in the product. A lot of us endusers do care about this small company.
That alone should be something to be proud of.

I think PureBasic is a bit too small (the number of developpers) to cover all area's. (multi OS, apps, games etc.)
When PureBasic expands just a little bit (not only programmers but find somebody who can do some moddest marketing also),
they will become the best company with the best products seen in decades.

Now, they are just a small diamond in the desert. (which is fine for me)

Yes, you already started a thread about it, almost word-for-word, right here:

Why? We heard you the first time. Why keep bringing it up?
I compile using 5.31 (x86) on Win 7 Ultimate (64-bit).

I agree with Steve everytime. Fred should try and corner the indie game dev market. He would be a fool not to. PB would quadruple it's userbase within a year if more time was spent polishing up the game making aspects.

I know that PB is also sold to people being on a low budget.
However, my tool 'suffers' under the low PureBasic price.
So reconsidering the price for newcomers might be useful.
At least a 19usd upgrade fee per major version?

One needs to be motivated.. somehow.

Hold on here.... Purebasic should cost more, so that your tool doesn't appear to be so expensive in comparison?

How about the theory that a higher price means less new customers, directly resulting in few potential customers for your tools?

I agree with Edwin....

If a product has a very low price, customers think the product is somehow inferior!

The price has to reflect the effort the developer put into the program.
Upgrades also need to recompensate the developer.

PS - I'm a very happy PBDev user. There is no better PureBasic add-on. Period.
- It was too lonely at the top.

If anyone can translate the French donation page I will make a donation right away.

(well I'm not a millionaire but with that amount of money Fred can buy himself a very
decent meal and a bottle of top class wine at a fancy restaurant... bon apetite!)

Hi,

My Opinion is, that it is most important to have a good programming language. Game programming is nice but needs a lot of time and testing.

By the way I found this in the ogre forum.

http://www.ogre3d.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=23419

Writing Games for Xbox through XNA Platform from Microsoft.
They only allow to use their .NET Platform on Xbox.

Hopefully they will left their Windows still open for unmanaged code.

A link to an intro to game programming with c# express.

afaik you can only develop for the XNA platform in Visual C# 2005 Express edition and better. I can't see MS changing this as they are trying to get managed code accepted as an industry-wide standard, and that would be a backward step in their thinking.

blueb said it very well.

:)

Since PB4 i think the price, what is it $59?, could be higher like 99 to 150.
My recommendation was to at least remove the free updates for life guarantee, but then for newcommers only since you can not (easily) change such a pollicy for existing users.
Starting with a 'fee' of 19usd is also very low, i was just suggesting a price, that's all.

No gaming, Please

Post by The Mexican »

As a newcomer to PB, I would like to say that the only reason I bought PB was because it contains many tools that allow me to do different things, not just games.
Why turn a balanced programming language like PB into a game programming language? I chose PB over DarkBasic and the other Basics out there because the future is not game programming but business programming. Database development and GUI's is the future of any programming language. The price should not be too steep, beacause of the heavy competition from open source languages like Ruby, Python, etc.
