For everything that's not in any way related to PureBasic. General chat etc...

Should I drop Messenger forever and use Google Talk?

Thinking of dropping MSN Messenger

Post by GeoTrail »

I'm thinking about completely dropping MSN Messenger for good. Does anyone have any things to say why I shouldn't drop it? Google Talk is offcourse my choice of replacement ;)

Why I wanna stop using it?
It's really slow. When it logs on it freezes the program for several seconds. It's way too bloated, too much heavy graphics, too many useless features such as winks and nudges. I hate talking to people on Messenger and having half or more of the text replaced by stupid icons and animated pictures leaving me to try to decode what the h*ll they are trying to say.

Then use trillian... It uses IRC, Jabber, AIM, ICQ, MSN and a thing called rendevous where you can talk to other people who use trillian locally. It's fast, doesn't suck my balls, and you can have as many accounts of each channel open as you like.

The onlything which sucks about it is file sending + msn, rest is all good.

And by the way, jabber can be configured to use GTalk.

Hope this helps, David.

Here on Linux I'm using Kopete which is really very rich of features and supportet protocols (IRC, Jabber, ICQ, AIM, Yahoo, MSN)
IMO you should use GTalk because Jabber isn't proprietary like MSN or ICQ and doesn't lower our rights....

> Then use trillian... It uses IRC, Jabber
That's not the complete truth: Jabber is only included in the commercial version.

I use Kopete too :P !
But before I found Kopete, I used Gaim and I was really satisfied with it

I used to use Trillian at home and at work, very nice program except that most of the IM services try to break it because it doesn't display the ads their program does so they would rather it didn't work on their systems so it would frequently quit working on one of the services until Cerullean could fix it.

Now I only use IM for work and the corporate standard is Office Communicator.

I used GAIM on linux, never hear of Kopete so I'll have to give it a try.

and as for "That's not the complete truth: Jabber is only included in the commercial version", Jabber is not included in either the free or the commercial version of trillian (And as a customer of many years, I know this for a fact) but it IS AVAILABLE as a downloadable plugin for both from the trillian support site.

Regards.

Yeah, I like Kopete too. Too bad it isn't available for Windows ;)
Isn't Trillian a commercial client?

I use gAIM. Its pretty good, I like it better than AIM/MSN in most cases. All I hate about it is that the IM windows don't remember the last place you put them, and always show up in the top left corner of my screen.

There is Trillian basic which is free and trillian pro which is commercial. But to be honest, I cannot remember the last time I ever used any of the pro version's (That I paid for) fancy features.

I think the best choice is GAIM, but I don't think MSN is too bloated, I just removed the crap :P:

At the end of the day, you decide what you want to live with. Personally, I always go with what 85% of the people I speak to every day use just so that I can talk to all of them.

And it always ends up being every other protocol I don't use (rolling eyes). So I use Trillian until I find something that does it better or looks prettier.:):):):):)
