Do we need another resource site?

I'm thinking about launching a resource site dedicated to Purebasic. The host plan I'm looking at is a deluxe plan with 4 GB of storage space and 50 GB of monthly transfere.

So before I do anything, I wanna ask, do we need a new resource site?
The idea is to create a storage and database where I would be hosting freeware/opensource libs, help files and manuals, code snippets, and maybe complete opensource projects where users can register, sign in and submit their files and they will be presented in a clean, but orderly way.

I ran a resource site for both NeoBook and Multimedia Builder acouple of years ago and that was very successfull.

My honest opinion is yes. The more people who have sites to store pb stuff on, the more 'backup' there is when things go wrong, servers go down, people get disinterested, services are slow etc, any number of reasons.

And on the positive side, people get more choices to sift through. I remember a couple of sites that vanished into the mists and one started and died without any content and that's sad. Users may have missed out on more good stuff.

I'd say go for it.

"Another" - I'm confused enough trying to find PB stuff as it is, so I'd probably not remember to use it, or it would just be another site I'd have to remember to search.

A single, "one stop shopping" site would be heaven sent, but I doubt we'll ever achieve it.

all-inkl.com I have the space, and I planned it, too(but I thought: better not, because of traffic, webspace, ...), thought about asking paul if I could use the old resource site theme, because it was cool in the old times when people could login there and upload their things and the style was fantastic.

Not only opensource please, do it like the old resource site. It was the best thing ever seen.

Do you have a screenshot or cached file of the old site? I can't remember seing that...



Does anyone have any suggestions to which system would be best to use? I know PHP-Nuke is popular, and is very easy to setup and maintain, I've used it alot myself in the past. But PHP-Nuke sites are always subject to attacks when someone figures out a new security hole.

On the MMB resource site I first used Xoops, then PHP-Nuke, both are great, but as I said above, security wise it isn't my first choice. The last system I used on the MMB site was one I wrote myself using PHP and MySQL. I had only one attack on that site, and that was a server global dDos attack which nobody could prevent anyways.

How about requested features? Which features would you want on a site that you would visit often?

And a note to other PB resource site managers:
I'm NOT trying to take any visitors from you, trust me. I want to do this for the users of PB.

The reason I closed the MMB site was partly because of an argument with the owner of the host company, which I worked for at the time, and because Mediachance agreed to support a new site which later became the official MMB resource site.

Something like aminet, where we can upload freely to a given category.

Maybe the maintainer could make a small app in Purebasic just to upload the code there..

Aminet looks like a nice site, simple and orderly.
Problem with freely uploading is people WILL upload viruses.
We had that at the MMB site for awhile but there was way too much virus submissions to allow free unmanaged uploading.

My idea is to get a few people, trusted PB members to act as moderators, to help with virus scanning of the files. Kinda like Softpedia, which is a great site. Problem there is that it can take days from a file is posted to it is online on the site.

But I think that would be the safest thing to do. All files that are submitted to a certain category, will be assigned to one or two people who will scan the files. That way they should be online quickly.

That's not bad. The host I already have an account with is in Norway. I actually got a webspace for free, but not with domain after a seminar with WebHuset and Microsoft.

Hi Geotrail,

This is a good idea.

Not sure how much work you want to put into this, but something that would be good would be to have resources in categories by Pure version number and by OS, eg, windows 4.00, windows 4.1, windows 5.0, linux 99.99 and etc

That would prevent a lot of confusion (and bad PR) for Pure. New users would be less likely to try to run older version stuff on newer version Pure.

Another nicety would be if there was a requirement for dependencies (userlibs, etc) to be attached to resources. I know when I first started I thought I had bought a bum steer because code didn't run because of missing userlibs.

But anyway another active ressource site beside my www.PureArea.net is welcome, but believe me: it isn't easy to keep things going - just think on PureWiki, which mostly depends on very few people. Beware, if he/they haven't enough time anymore...

I know Andre, I've run several similar sites before. And I don't start anything unless I'm 100% devoted to it. Right now I just have to think a few things through before I decide if and how I should proceed. Not only about the site setup etc, but also the financial perspective of it all
