It's cool to see the comments like "Stupid hack..." - shows that MS developers are just as frustrated as the rest of us with some "features"!

I think you're right. IIRC Apple tried to nail them for it. May be wrong, though, that is going back decades into the last millenium.
Edit: Mind you, it is possible something called GEM was first cab off the rank with this.
