ReactOS
Trond,
Not wanting to mess up the bug thread too much, but I am very interested in your experience with ReactOS.
How is it going, how have you set it up, how close you think it is to being "real", and etc.
Would appreciate your comments and views. Thanks!

You also running through VMware?
What this world needs is another OS that is:
Something needs to come out of the woodwork and kick ass.
What this world needs is another OS that is:
- A: Not MS windows. They (MS) need competition, and badly. Something that takes 20-25% of their market share within a year would change their approach big time.
B: Not a linux/unix derivative. Too many variations, too many differences between the flavours, not enough dumbing down for office desktop use.
C: Simple is okay. Even DOS-simple or C/PM,M/PM simple, but see (F) below.
D: Supports a reasonable range of office & associated software. WP, SS, Email, Browser, etc.
E: Has a high (eg basic) and low (eg asm) level development language.
F: Can deal with modern hardware.

Well I think the Linux Distros need to collaborate much more because Linux itself if more then Usable, as I also stated in other Threads I'm using it nearly fulltime now and I have to say nothing would get me back to Windows^^ However I think that the most important thing happening in the Linux world is that commercial companys start to support the company and people like Mark Shuttleworth help the community to get more structured so that not 100 teams are working on the same thing with different approaches or even the same ones. That's also an important thing about the *BSD systems, they are more structured than Linux and because they profit from the work of the Linux guys they can produce systems wich are more ONE OS than Many as it is with Linux, they are lacking the Hardware support though.
All this and my own experience make me believe that after about 20 years Linux and other open Operating Systems are finally but slowly getting ready to bash Microsoft. I also thing that this business is very unpredictable, it took Microsoft 6 years to develop Windows Vista and everything they got is a shameless and very very bad done copy of Mac OS X, and the thing is if Vista doesn't sell Microsoft could lose market share rapidley. Apple on the other hand is working a lot faste because they have to care less about hardware support and already have a 20th century appropriate core. Which it is easy to port to since it uses Unix librarys everywhere so for example for commandline tools there is nearly full source compatability to any othe *nix and there are a lot of these. So we will see...

.. Also, Polo, i didnt know you are one of the developers for ReactOS ( http://www.reactos.org/xhtml/en/index.html ). Awesome!
ZETA should be called Yeta, don't you think?
Nik, understood.
The big thing is the world of difference between many tens of thousands of computer gurus and many millions of buiness computer users.
If I take off my "wanna be a geek" hat and put on my "one of the good ole business buddies" hat, the view changes dramatically.
Briefly, business doesn't want to hire clerks, receptionists, etc, who double as computer geeks, and most don't want to hire a full time geek. Like it or not, linux/unix has the rep that this is what it takes. (Linux also has to live down a reputation for being the OS of choice for superior twits - not my opinion, just sharing).
At the same time there is irritation at being dictated to by MS. At having to upgrade stuff that works perfectly well just because MS decided it was time. Who cares about wonderous 3D graphics enhancements when word-processing and accounting are what the machine is really there to do? When buying a licence to use an MS product also increases your chances of being sued by MS if you misuse it. You pay them $$$ to get a hook in you.
That is my opinion (from the feedback I get from people) about how people outside of the industry, but forced to deal with the industry, think.
So, I reckon something without the reek of either MS or Linux will go well.

Not really, it lacks a basic language and it lacks office software. Also it's not ready for use, it's got memory leaks everywhere so you can't run it for long before you run out of memory.Shannara wrote:http://www.skyos.org/ <- seems to fit the bill, especially concerning various coding languages available.Dare wrote:You also running through VMware?
