French language question

Post by Nik »

I need some help from the French guy on here, today we wrote a classtest about french and there were these two words in the title "écologie" which is clear that it means ecology but the second word is "égologie" and I can't find it neither in a fren-german dictionary nor in a french-french dictionary, anyone knows what it means. Some translatet it with economy some (including me) with egoism since this is what the text the title belongs to mainly talks about.

It's probably from 'ego' which means 'yourself'. So it's the science which you study your own self (see how my english is crap once we get out of regular computer terms ).

I don't know a single word of french but I think a french/german translation alone
won't help you. "Egologie" is a fixed term used in philosophical and psychological
contexts (e.g. egological consciousness)

AFAIK it comes from "ego" and "logic", but I may be totally wrong as I never
found my way to any university...

Keywords for further searching: "Phänomenologie, Schütz, Husserl"
Good programmers don't comment their code. It was hard to write, should be hard to read.

I did a google for "écologie égologie" and got 14,500 matches. Translated some and still don't have a clue what it means. :)

In English, Ego is about the self, the id, the, ummmm, conscious psyche that controls thought and behaviour. It is about an awareness of self, the individuals essential nature, that which distinguishes "self" from all the other "selfs" out there. It has connotations relating to self esteem and self worth.

The word comes from a Latin source.

"Ology" generally means a field of study or an area or branch of knowledge, a scientific discipline, whatever. Like Theology, Geology, etc.

Ecology is the science studying the interactions of organisms with their environment and with each other.

If the two words are used together, and if the French roots are the same as the English roots (likely, I think) then we seem to be discussing the environment of the self (id). Perhaps environment as a parameter in patterning behaviour, where environment is not just physical but also emotional?

Perhaps I am guessing badly and talking crap. :)

I wonder why I got all caught up in this? Perhaps it was the way (and where) I was brought up.
