Just curious to know what everyone thinks is a "waste" of PC resources.
If my PC is turned off I am not using (or wasting?) any resources. (However I appear to be wasting my PC). Conversely, if my PC is flat out doing heaps of things, I am using (am I wasting?) all my PC resources. (But my PC is working and not a waste of money).
It seems the idea is that if your PC is using, say, all the RAM, this is a waste. Or not good.
Compare with, say, a store. If my store is empty, I am not using (and I am wasting) all my resources. If my store is cram-packed with goods and customers I am using all my resources (and not wasting a thing!). I might want more space (but turfing out goods and customers is not the best way to get it).
Compare also with a nice lounge in the house. If I never use it, I reduce wear and tear on the furniture etc. But am I wasting it if I use it or am I wasting it by never using it?
So I was wondering what you considered a waste of PC resources.

Well, I figure if the computer is turned on and its just setting there, then that's a waste. If the computer is on, because of waiting for an IM or an Email, I consider that a waste, since you could use Blackberry and it doesnt use as much resources
If the computer is downloading that will take all night, I consider that a waste (of electricity!), I recently invested in a network harddrive w/ ftp server, so that i do not need my computer on to "download", and the drive takes less electricity
..
Thats all for me.

Re: Wasting PC resources
If the computer is doing something for me, then I do not consider it a waste,
no matter how long it takes (eg. a big render, or ISO download, etc).
If I don't need anything done, I'll hibernate the PC until next time I need it,
because I do consider it a waste of electricity if it's not doing anything at all.

I compile using 5.31 (x86) on Win 7 Ultimate (64-bit).
