PureBasic 4.0 beta - ReadMe.html = I like what I'm reading!

Everything else that doesn't fall into one of the other PB categories.

PureBasic 4.0 beta - ReadMe.html = I like what I'm reading!

Post by Intrigued »

Fred, I appreciate the major overhaul of PB via just reading the ReadMe.html file!

Big double-thumbs up. I can tell straight away you packed a lot of time (along with you helpers, assitants, etc.) into PB 4 (beta).

Bravo!

Sincerely,

Wow... I'm away for 12 hours, 4.0 beta 1 is released and the forum explodes... Wow...

Or maybe that should be:
v4.0 is out and WOW OH WOW OH WOW! WOO HOOOO!

At least maybe if I was 15 years younger, that's what I would be saying. Oh what the heck... WOW OH WOW OH WOW! WOOOOO HOOOOOOOO!!!!

I see UDP has finally been added to the network side. That's good. By the look of some of the changes that have been made, I could almost throw away my C compiler. For example I might now be able to rewrite the crypto library in PB completely due to some of the new types and other bits and pieces. Especially as these changes will eventually be "ported" to the Linux and MacOS X versions of PB I imagine. I know there were always work arounds, but for me one of the big additions is the removal of the 32kb string limit as I do a lot of work involving strings which is what I use C for mostly these days. This one update now means I can drop 3 of the DLL's I was working on and leaves me definitely thinking of rewriting the crypto one in PB... Hmm ok, forget thinking (I forget to think all the time  ) I'm going to start on converting it right now.

How about animated .gif support though? Is the licensing issue still a setback?

I agree, README is great, but... without new Help file its difficult to rewrite old programs to new PB!
Maybe some BETA HELP?

The readme is the beta help :)

In the beta there will be bug fixes and changes, that will make it in the final docs.

Remember, everybody wo works with a Beta is a Beta-tester, this is mostly a more experienced coder...that dont need docs

Ha! You are an experienced coder mate. I'm the "noob" who needs the docs. I have actaully swapped back to v3.94 for now as I'm definitely still learning PB. Looking forward to being able to use v4.0 properly later on though. :)

Like most here, I am really excited about what I've seen in the beta release.

I am curious, though (maybe even a little concerned), as to whether the various versions of PB will have the same command set in the near future. That is, a single source code that will compile on all systems with little or no changes. (Obviously, user libs will most likely still be created for one or possibly two platforms, depending on the skill level of the contributor).

And I'm sure the docs for the final release of PB4 are being finalized as we speak.

All in all, an excellent release!

Thanks Fred and company!
