Is this the worst bloatware ever?

Post by PB »

Just bought a Hewlett-Packard HP PSC 1610 printer the other day, probably
not the best printer around but best for features-vs-price for me, but I was
shocked to see that it installed 257 MB of data from its Setup.exe! Including
the .NET framework! Come on, I mean 257 MB just to PRINT? Sheesh.

Luckily it has 2 redeeming features for me: you can make photocopies and
print photos direct from a memory card, all standalone with the PC off; and
the second redeeming feature is the memory card slots act as another drive
in "My Computer", so I don't need to buy a memory card reader to browse
my SD card anymore. :) And the slot is FAST -- much faster than browsing
with Microsoft's ActiveSync rubbish. ;)

Edit: Actually, my last comment got me thinking... remember my USB speed
post where I lamented the fact that transferring a 2 MB photo takes about
2 minutes? I just threw the card into the printer and tried it -- INSTANT!
Just a regular cut/paste now to transfer my pics. :D So obviously the lack of
speed was thanks to Microsoft's pathetic "Mobile Device" browser found
under "My Computer", rather than my USB port, cable or SD card. Phew!
I compile using 5.31 (x86) on Win 7 Ultimate (64-bit).

My own HP folder is 308 Mb's. This post (about bloatware) made me remember the good old days when I struggled
with C/Basic/Pascal compilers that needed 19-20 Kbytes to install and run. In my 22Kb home computer environment,
leaving me with less than 10% of RAM to use for my own programs.

Luckily, things have changed for the better since then. :)
