Anyone in the market for a badass laptop?
got a sony sr1k, does on a fresh battery roughly 6 hours, after 3 years that drops to 4 hours, then suddenly to 10 minutes then dead
my previous dell did 2..3 hours on it's standard battery pack, the large pack added another 4..5 hours, allowing me to work 6 to 8 hours depending on settings

I know many people would like other things than Acer but actually i have only had great experiences with them. We have a 2.8 ghz new laptop we just bought, however the interesting is in this case our first Acer laptop(we have had a laptop in the house since 1994 i think) wich is probably aroun 1.5 years old. Its an 2.3 ghz with 256 mbyte ram, and the battery simply just works. Since we got it it has hold a batterylifetime on about 3 hours, and it still has that probably -20 or 30 minutes though. That laptop has even been to South Africa, and afaik we also had it to Egypt. And bulgaria!
Its used every day here, either for school work, web browsing, games like Jedi Knight 2, programming, 3d modeling, and much more.
But battery keeps on working.

Man, I should be running pool or something.... everyone kicks in a buck (or equivalent in your local moola) and chooses a date.... the one closest to whenever Shannara finally posts a positive comment of some sort gets the $$$$.Shannara wrote:Sorry for the bad news. But heck, I'll give you a few hundred for it .. thats about all it's worth near the end of the first year
I'd pick June 1, 2049.
Anyhow, laptop batteries wear out.... on any brand of laptop. Anyone buying a second hand laptop should expect to have to replace the battery at some point... and anyone hanging onto a laptop for more than a year or two should expect to replace the battery. That's why they are removable....
well, you're not always giving things the 'optimistic' twist, dear shanarra, but then, you may be able to impress us by your soon to be expected contribution to 'pure - the album'

Well, then, $550 but you pay me the shipment, lazy boy, among with a six pack of beer (must arive cool, if they are hot, you'll be in trouble). You'll have to find out how to make them arrive cool though... Let the force be with you (although not HP's force, it's way too weak).
If the pack is new I might pay that though.
Those battery packs arent cheap, thats why I say this.
About battery charge life... IBM notebooks are one of the best in that aspect. Their power management tools are very well done, apart from that you'll get about 6 hours of use with the stock pack, still after some years you'll be able to use it about 4hs, obviously this packs has a limit of charges. Obviously they havent got memory -_-
Had a used IBM with the stock battery, never replaced it.. Had it for an year (the notebook was already about 2 years oldie) and never had a problem with the battery life at all... IBM is good, good, good.
You shouldnt care about the external aspect of the notebook... it might have an orgasmic design, but have the worst components... So check out before buying crap.
I need a notebook for stationary purposes (moving from place to place but to docking stations) so battery life is not an issue in this case. However I wont buy anything that cant stand on for 30 minutes.
By the way.. do you know what IBM means in spanish? ()

Sorry, been offline for the past 3 days because i moved. Wow, Shannara, whoever you bought a laptop from was a moron.
Laptop batteries can give you near-full lifetime as long as you don't keep them them plugged in after they've hit 100% charge.
Doing that causes the battery to lose its lifetime. This laptop has been great. Absolutely no problems and that "one year" comment is just bullshit.
Also I might add that depending on the battery type you will get different lifetime as well. There are 4-12 cell batteries. I believe this one has an 8 cell. Lasts about 2.5-3 hours as long as you have the scalable CPU driver installed. (powernowd works in linux, AMD makes one for windows).
No scratches on the screen either.
Sorry about the offers guys, but these go on ebay for 850-950. You'd have to get reasonably close to that with an offer. Thanks for the look.
Those posting comments about HP laptops you may have been correct in the past. (And dont count Compaq and HP laptops as the same, they aren't). If I had to rate laptop brands as bad, I'd probably choose Dell to be one of the worst these days. Never before have I had so many problems with a laptop.
The Toshibas I've had were pretty reliable too.
