Edit: BTW, why is Linux such a catch-word and not GNU. Isn't 70% - 90% of any linux distro based on GNU Unix. It just sits on top. Hey - maybe that's it - visibility is everything!

But imagine the cost of fighting a trade mark dispute with a big co. Better to protect early than risk costly battle.

Linux, AFAIK, was a wee project and won over the HURD (which I think now works and, I think, is a better concept). At the end of the day it is "only" the kernel, all else (practically) is GNU stuff so original credit should be Stallmans. Linux, alas, captured peoples attention and attracted a vast army of supporters so one could argue without it, well, where would the rest be?
