Heard the the MS express beta software was a move towards simplification of the interface. Also (perhaps mis)understood that it was not net.
Alas, it required net.
Anyhow, downloaded. Started install. Started kettle. Made coffee. Drank coffee. Scratched itchy parts. Watched the pretty progress bar. Had a chat with someone.
Finally .... !
Waded through the (simple to save you time ??) registration process.
Now, somewhere, buried under reams of bumf and verbosity, is a simplified interface. lol.
I wonder how long it will take to uninstall?

Carl Sassenrath's experiences of installing Visual Studio.net

I sat at my desk and stared at my screen for a good while. I thought back on the dozens of computer languages I had learned over the years, and some of the powerful IDEs, most of which are now long gone. I thought of systems like Smalltalk, Lisp (including so many nice environments like the MIT/Symbolics Lisp Machine, TI Lisp Explorer, Expertelligence, and others), Scheme, Logo, Self, Clu, and even Forth, BASIC, Java, Python, C, C++, and so many others. I wondered how the world of teaching programming and computer science had come to what we had just experienced.

Edit:
PS: I still haven't found out how to get the three free online books they promised if I went through all this ...
hehe. They can keep the books, I now have a lifetime of reading to do before I can find/use the software.
