What linux do you recommend?

Hi!

I am thinking of switching to linux, so I wanted to know which linux is recommended and does PureBasic work with it properly?

I looked at coLinux and it seems to be nice, but has someone runned PB with it? And if yes, does it work properly?

coLinux is an emulated linux. If you want to install linux natively I recommend ubuntu, or if you have older hardware, debian.

I think I'll go with Ubuntu, so my equipment is:

Ubuntu
SDL
GTK
PureBasic

But, which version of the GTK should I install? GTK1 or GTK2?

Hi,

I'm running Kanotix and PB works (except the GTK2-IDE which doesen't work an most Distros) perfecly.

I think any Debian based Distro is a good choice. If you need a EXCELENT Hardware-detection, Kanotix is a must! http://kanotix.com
You may try the Live-cd.. and as second choice the Ubunto Distro...

So you can see which Distro fits your needs.. PB is running on both

both are installed... you have to install the devel-files at least of gtk2 (gtk1 is more and more depreciated...) but you can install the 1.2 too (and I don't know, if they are used by the ide...)

I recommend Beatrix or Zenwalk unless you need wireless networking. If so I can't recommend anything.

It's very easy to use and it installs the latest gfx drivers automaticly.

I think it's deffinitly a good idea to go with the better known distributions since you get more support there maybe http://distrowatch.com
is a good address to look for convenient distros, anyway I'm also a big fan of everything debian based, this includes Ubuntu, Kubuntu, KANOTIX, SimplyMEPIS, Debian itself and others.

hehe, well I'm not a fan of the good old Suse and Red Hat either, but I doubt tiny distros would work on my Laptop. I like DSL thozugh especially as an ideal VMWare guest. On the other hand I found Puppy to be the most terrible thing I ever saw.. and even Xubuntu shocked me when I couldn't find a method to graphically configure my network, while evrything else was easily configurable.

Hmm, I've got exactly the wrong impression again. Fedora core doesn't boot on my laptop (well, it sort of boots but then kernel panic). I think the thing about Linux is that not everything can be tested everywhere so many people get different results and different impressions. It's all hardware dependant.

One thing I don't like about Ubuntu, though, is that every claims everything is working so nicely. So when I say, "then why don't my wireless work?" they either say "oh, wireless, you can't expect that to work" or "just type blah blah". The problem is, I've done everything, followed all advice, and it will not work. I'm not angry at Ubuntu because wireless doesn't work, I'm angry because they claim everything works so nicely, while it's not better than most other things I've tried. If it doesn't work, better say it straight out.
