Hey I installed (installeD!?!?!?!?!? just runned from a cd -_-) DSL at my bros notebook.. its amazing, I think it was less than 50! It's a small linux, pretty cool but I dont see it useful.. yet, and as I dont have another machine for testing, I cant tell about it.. I just mounted an usb device as for testing this little linux, everything ran ok.. comes with tons of stuff installed, very very good for small companys that wants to have a free and very very small OS to work with.. (IMO If you have Windows in your company, you have guys playing games.. just that, hahaah)

Well anyway just wanted to have your opinions about DSL

Don't think so..... at least not for everything, in a future, mechanics will be supressed for pure digital hardware (instead of harddrives, kinds of smart media cards, just for giving an example) ... theres already some little cute stuff of this, but its small and not powerful yet.. anyway I think thats the future (about hardware), just imagine that booting a whole OS from a digital storage source like a memory, could take just seconds, instead of the minutes of now well a good system can take a minute to boot, or a bit less (boot winxp) but well anyway.. the future is in digital stuff.. I think that cd-runned OS' is useful for fixes and stuf like that. for now.. its fun to play with.

The OS you named is more than 600mbs... the one I named is linux in 50mbs! I even made win98se in 120mbs a month ago.

I think you can run your own programs and others for linux too.

As I see.. you dont install it, you just boot it from a cd.. but can be booted from your harddrive if you make a boot file or something, I guess..

you can run it from windows using a virtual machine of course it would be able.



Requeriments?? hmmm runs on every machine.. I guess minimum 32mb or 16.. of ram.

But.. you can always ask or check the FAQ if there is one.. I just got the link from my bro and we downloaded and tested DSL in a rewritable cd card.. that's all, inside the small linux, we mounted an usb device (had mp3 in there, and played them with out problems), it was a fast os, and never crashed (just ran a few appls, changed the skin, and played mp3 meanwhile.. nothing from the other world, just testing a bit).. well I suggest you to test it if you can. it was fun.

It's a full-working linux-OS including tons of programs and it fits perfectly on a CD and can boot from it.

But DSL fits on a bootable USB-Memory-Stick... cool.

yup.. runs hell fast. DSL on a booteable usb pendrive or memory like an SD for example.

Really? 8O I tested it on a P3 700mhz (notebook, 256mb ram, 10gb hdd)

yes, it's a P1 60mhz, 40 mb ram, 520mb hd

but it works great and runs fast though it takes a while to display "complicated" websites :roll:

I bet that it takes a while to, but I think theres nothing to do about.. (you could disable stuff like big images, or flash (supported already by dsl ??), applets or big java-scripts , I've seen a little browser (for windows) made in PB, that was hell fast, but had no java-script support.. if it had java-script, i'll be using it (lacks of css support tho, I hated that too).

The browser is called: OffByOne (http://www.OffByOne.com)Supports SSL, and is pretty fast, has even an image zoom function (but why im talking about it?, oh maybe cause its faster than MSIE -_- ) anyway, you could still optimize DSL to work faster on your oldie pc (you said it ran fast? woah, gotta build an oldie pc soon then got hardware to build about 3 of them at home).

It installs a full Linux from CD, leaving untouched your previous Win OS.
When I end my Knoppix session, my sistem is exactly as before.
Knoppix is very handy to test new assembled Pcs, before install any OS, and for system recovery.
