i want to update my "win2000 pro" system with SP4 (german) from MS and taked a look at:
http://www.microsoft.com/Windows2000/do ... nload.asp
... in the end of the site you will see a table with the defination and sizes of the different SP4 download packs. I am a bit confused.
I only want to download a full version of the SP4 to brun on a CD-Rom and install it later on any computer without internet-connection! The Win2000Pro SP4 pack only needs all in one about 15,6 MB - So, why need the Win2000Pro SP4 network pack nearly 130 MB???
Someone an idea where to download Win2000Pro SP4 as standalone full file without donwloading later any stuff from ms sites? I think there must be somewhere a full version of SP4 about 16 MB!? 10x

The network installation is the full file, that you can use to install without
an internet connection. This is what you want.
The express setup just downloads some installer files, and then updates via
internet when you run it, that's why it is so small.

hi freak
10x for the fast reply. network install file is the full version and express you will download some installer file, i know. but why is there such a big size different? Even both SP4 versions are for win2000pro
express (all in one) = 15,6 MB
network (one file) = 129 MB
i cant believe that you need 114 MB only for network intallation!? seems the network version will install some more stuff - isnt it? but where are exactly the different between both versions to have such a different filesize ?

Hi Ralf,
I think what freak is saying (and my understanding of how it works) is that the express install is just a small piece of software you download normally. It then handles the rest of the download (the SP) and the installation of that SP.
Also I think each SP is incremental (all patches) and so contains everything for all the previous SPs and auto-updates between, so it will be huge.
Hope that is on track, and helps.

@Dare2
mhhhh... you are right but what i mean is following... i will try to explain it again.
the MS page say following related SP4 update for Win2kpro:
Express Installation: Size 610 KB + 15 megabytes (MB)
Network Installation: Size 129 megabytes (MB)
When using express version i have to install the 610k file and then this file download the rest of 15 mb, ok. but as you may see the size differnent of both versions (all needed datas/files) are 15,6 : 129 MB, why?

Aha, sorry misread you first time.
I would hazard a guess that the one is for the computer connecting, so MS can see what is needed and just DL/Install that, whereas the other is for many computers (not connected) and so no decisions can be made, everything must be downloaded.
[EDIT]
Just checked.
The Express installation can be significantly faster to download than the Network installation. The Express installation detects the service pack files that are already installed on your computer. It then installs only those files that need to be updated. You must stay connected to the Internet during the installation.
..
Because you can use the Network installation method to install the service pack on multiple computers, and downloading the Network installation files takes a substantial amount of time, Microsoft recommends that you save the files that you download on your computer. This enables you to complete multiple installations, restart the installation, or reinstall SP4 without downloading the files again.
Anyhow, I'll butt out now.
