Random map generator info

I generate a random map (for a 2d strat game) that basically just determines the terrain types for cells (hexes) on the gameboard.
I have a number of approaches. All give generally (but not always) adequate maps, so sometimes the map is not very good from a playability point of view. None give consistently good maps.
Does anyone know of a site that discusses this sort of thing? Concepts as much as code.

In the search for tutorials I went to this site:

It smacked me around with popups and ..
.. it somehow grabbed notepad.exe and tried to connect to the site.
How the heck did it do that?
