ok i got a new AMD 2800, probably gonna exchange it for the AMD 3200. AMD claims that the 3200 means eqivalent to pentium 3.2 Ghz. when i run the program "performance test", the ratings i get are lower than posted scores of other users who have pentium 2.8 Ghz. but my officemate has a pentium 3 Ghz and 512 meg of RAM, and when we play halo:combat evolved, my machine totally smokes his. i even downgraded from 1.5 gig RAM to 512 by taking 2 chips out, put my old 128 meg video card in instead of my 256, and it still blew his machine totally away. his has lots of stops and stutters, and mine runs totally clean. whats the deal with that. my math operations and processor speed are lower then his by a good bit in performance test, but in gaming with the same amount of ram and video, my machine shreds his. any ideas? and is the AMD 3200 worth it since its only rated at 2.4 gHz?

Most consumers look only to the CPU Mhz, and forget a good motherboard and chipset is very important.

I have seen PIII 866 on a top quality ASUS motherboard with 840 chipset that outperform a Pentium 4 1.6Ghz with SIS low cost chipset easy.

So it's the total package that's important....

i can confirm that, got a p3-800 on an asus (via apollo i think?) with all the proper drivers etc. that runs like hell

my current xp2500 (overclocked to 2800) with a gforce4 4800se on an asrock board performs just so so... yes, of course it's fast, but not as fast as it could be... then again, it was a *cheap* upgrade, so it's hard to complain :-)
