It works also (pretty) fine on Suse 8.1. But nevertheless I think Saboteur is right ...

Fred is running Debian

I use Red Hat and Suse, and sometimes Debian.

I've the chance to get Suse 8.0 for less money. Does it include all what's needed, or its better to use 8.1 or 9.0 ?

Hi Andre!

Suse 8.0 had (like I heard/read) many bugs, but if you can get it for less money, I think you can try it. There are also several Updates on the Suse server and a Kernel-Update will clear some problems, too. (so I think).

If this is right with the many bugs...

Big update downloads aren't possible with my 56k modem....

I'm not familar with Linux, I simply need a complete Linux distribution which runs without the need of many modifications. It's mainly for PureBasic, all my other work will still be done on WinXP, I think.

Hello PWS32 & Andre,

Hummm... like many other things, choosing a Linux distribution is largely a matter of personal preference. I've been using Mandrake since 8.0 and have always been very pleased. Currently I'm running 9.1 (solid as a rock) simply because for many people there are too many "problems/issues" with the new 9.2 version. (myself

)

With that said, I'll add that I've also used both RedHat and SuSe at different times and was satisfied with both.

The main difference that I see is that from a development viewpoint, Mandrake and SuSe both seem to provide better access to some of the "under the hood" features of Linux, than that of RH.

i in particular like Knoppix 3.3 (2003-11-19) from edmunds-enterprises.

@Andre:
I think, if it is real not to expensive (and I think it can't be, because there are 3 new versions) you should try it. I'm running 8.1 and it's just one "step" higher ... and I don't have really big problems.

But I also don't know how other distributions work ... perhaps better, perhaps not!?

I had Suse Linux 8.0 Professional and had some problems
with install here (GeForce4, dual-PIII-1000). Now i have
Suse Linux 9.0 Professional and i really like it.

Its 77,-Euro in stores (Mediamarkt,Saturn,..), comes on
1 DVD (double-sided) and 5 CDs and 2 big manuals.
Has everything you need... full install is 10 GB, minimum
install 400 or 500 MB.

Its the best distro iÂ´ve seen so far...
