A day old chick with root password. Tiny, yellow, and extremely dangerous.

Nothing more terrifying than update ready.
Every time I see that I'm one step closer to switching back to Linux for good or pondering if I should go for a Mac

Can't update, if can't download.

I keep my working windows offline. If I really need an update, I browse Microsoft for it's particular kbd.
I browse internet with a dedicated machine.

I block the dns but every now and then it leaks through on restart like if the power goes out and it checks before my dns blocker takes effect.
I'm still considering ditching windows completely. I'm just lazy.

Why not pausing the updates for "some" years?
- Set Windows Update pause
-> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate\UX\Settings
-> FlightSettingsMaxPauseDays = 36500
more Info
That's how I did it. The normal driver updates and Defender updates (for those who use Defender) still run.
And if you want to install a feature update, you can download it from the Windows Update Catalog and install it manually. This way, you can be sure you won't have to deal with unwanted updates and restarts when you don't need them.

Yes, the truth is that windows is a chaos.
Unfortunately, the average users uses windows.
In 2024, Windows 73%, Mac in Europe 14%, USA 24%, Linux 4%. The numbers speak.
If you want a lot of users (and problems

), windows it's the platform.
Is like VHS and betamax

Betamax (or betacam, include 2000) was to much better, but every body uses vhs. (I know Phillips released the patent and ate up the market. Sony did bad)
I the same story...

My experience with windows is this:
-Me: I need a socks,
-Windows: Here it is, your welcome.
-Me: It's a bit tight, and it's color is ugly pink, do you have a different one?
-Windows:Thats the only socks I can provide unfortunately.
-Me: well wathever, Fine...
My experience with Linux:
-Me: I need a socks,
-Linux, You can have, but you have to make it for yourself.
-Me: Ok, let's make one then.
-Linux: to make it, you have to have a sewing needle and some threads. For the needle, you will need some iron and a hammer to smith it...
-Me: well, Ok then...
In the end, that would be the best socks you ever had, but the way to have it is long and not easy.

Windows wouldn't say "unfortunately".

@Kurzer
Thats really nice!! Jurassic version
@miso
Your sock analogy is really good!
You are talking about minecraft OS?
At the end you put your shoes without socks with both OS.
@BarryG
With all the bad things included, in my opinion, Windows is the easiest to use. I work with all three systems and I have to admit that I like them all, with their pros and cons.

Lol
Also a side effect: You managed to create a couple of socks in Linux. From now on, a normal windows user won't even recognise you are talking about socks, when you start to talk about them.

Probably use useless information but if you HIBERNATE your windows computer you won't have your workspace disturbed by a forced update.
