AWS RDS - Anyone familiar with this?

I'm currently on a project which requires hosting on AWS EC2. So far, the basic storage that is included in the EC2 is sufficient for the PostgresSQL which has been deployed there, much the same as all of my other servers on DigitalOcean, but with MySQL. Simple and contained.
But the client requires an AWS RDS for this. Although I have no experience with it, the deployment is quite automated, and the connection is quite straightforward. No issues there.
However, the RDS pricing is tripping me up, big time. I am lost on the concept of instance charges vs uptime charges, and on-demand and reserved-instance pricing. There's even mention of per GB per hour usage rates. And some seem to suggest that RDS billing could spiral to upwards of $500 and more, dependent on the monthly data traffic in and out of the db.
Anyone able to enlighten a BASIC user the Sesame Street way?
