Google introduced jpegli today:

According to Google it shall work faster and more efficiently than libjpeg. Since nobody seems to be interested in JPEG-XL (which is sad in my eyes, we still rely on a 30 years old format...) some of its features are ported to jpeg while still keeping full compatibility.

Looks very interesting on paper with its backwards compatibility, to see if it's adopted by photo, phone manufacturers... standards die hard.
I would like to have a pngli as well

You can already optimize PNGs with OxiPNG. It uses a Google library too and can reduce the size of PNGs up to 90% without breaking compatibility. It takes some time though (but is using mutlithreading).
I, for one, would really like to see JPEG-XL replace JPEG (and PureBasic to support it). Looks like it won't ever happen.
And Each, old habits die hard. MP3 is still a thing...
