The expiration of the patents which caused so much debate (at midnight US Eastern Standard Time on June 19, 2003 for the US patent, and midnight local time on June 18 and 19, 2004 for the European and Japanese counterparts, respectively).
Type 'GIF patent expires' into search engines to verify.
Will Purebasic allow for native support of .GIF soon?

The patent has expired in the United States, however it is still valid outside of the U.S. for at least another year. One benefit already realized by this is that PHP will again support GIF format.
BTW: I have already tell I don't like GIF ?

Codemonger: check out
http://www.wotsit.org -- it has *tons* of documents on file formats including graphics files, documents, archive files etc. Should be in every programmer's link archive!

I use GIF in my programs for two reasons.
1.) Photoshop 7 does not support PNGs.
2.) I do not like wasting space (BMP) and poor quality (JPG)
3.) I prefer to keep my downloads and diskspace as low as possible.
4.) The 256 color limit doesnt bother me, because my cards still look good in that format, Examples found @
http://www.realmsofconflict.com/Solar_Flare.gif ,
http://www.realmsofconflict.com/Earth_Slide.gif ,
http://www.realmsofconflict.com/Tornado.gif
5.) I guess I have to use some third party library in order to keep using PB

I bought PS7 at a local store (Juneau Electronics). It has no option to save nor load PNGs.

I use Corel products for imaging, but you should try
save as web
and maybe an import command ? to load png's
or something like that in the file menu ... I used to use photoshop ...
the save command is only for proprietary formats that adobe has created.
Hope this helps.
