Spam sucks

Post by aszid »

Well, my personal opinion is that they should jail the spammers, and if the spammers use dodgy tactics and can't be tracced, then they should HEAVILY fine the companies that employ the spammers. (unless they turn over the name(s))

i think spam is a major problem in this day & age, and it's getting worse far faster than it's getting better. with virii taking over computers to send spam, and other ILLEGAL methods that are becoming commonplace. I live in the US, so the whole 1st ammendment issue comes into play, but i really don't think it should apply quite the same when dealing with anonymous electronic "speech" i also like to think that i have the "freedom FROM speech" so if i don't want to hear it, i shouldn't have to.

other people bring up comparisons with tele-marketers and junk post-mail, but there is NO comparison. telemarketers & junk mail senders actually have to pay for their advertising, and it really doesn't cost the "target" any money or time (if they just hang up).

anyhow, i'm curious to see what other's views on this are.

I agree. I hate spam - I get several hundred a day at least. But probably %90 of the companies that do the spamming are outside the US - that makes prosecution here in the US difficult at best.. I wish there was more that could be done from a legal standpoint...

I'd send all telemarketers straight to hell if I could. One cold call from someone wanting to sell be some scam insurance policy bothers me much more than my 200 emails about young teen porn and the handy stitch! There is now legislation in the US to combat the telemarketers - I put my name and numbers on the national no-call list and the calls have almost stopped! A system like that for email *might* work a little - but most spammers wouldn't pay attention to any such regulation as most are outside the reach of US laws anyway...

My personal slogan for telemarketers : Don't call me people, I'll call you. If you call me at home or on my cell without my express permission I will hunt you down and kick a mudhole in your ass then stomp it dry.

Back on topic... The only real way to stop spam is to change the entire way email works. It's a system that was never supposed to get as big as it has gotten and relies too much on people's good faith to operate smoothly. So much infrastructure is in place now that I'm afriad the change won't happen very quickly. It seems we're in for a very long and annoying battle with those that would waste our time....

SpamAssassin is your friend (though the overhead will make your mail server it's prison b*tch)! I'd had to beef up all my email servers in recent years due to the spam and virus filtering. That sucks!

Death to spam! Death to spammers! Kill whitey!

Oops.. Don't know what that last one was about..

Spam,spam, egg chips and spam.

I agree that a new mail system need to be worked out. Spam is getting out of control and wasting both workers time, and companies resources.

The majority of spam I get comes to an address I used on the newsgroups a couple of years back, so anything sent to that address is simply deleted off the server.
For any website that needs a login, I always use a free account such as Hotmail. Eventually, that address will suddenly get spammed to hell and back, so I just create a new one and start again.

Why does everyone else get interesting spam..all I get are adverts for new chemicals for my septic tank, and breast enlargement tablets !

I`d just like 5 minutes alone with a spammer and a 4"x2" with a couple of embedded rusty nails

umm, that post had absolutley nothing to do with the topic.

feel free to be "anti-american" but you'd be very ignorant to think that just because our government did something, that ALL the citizens supported it. i'm sure your government has done some things that you didn't like too, haven't they?

being anti-american simply for the sake of being anti-american is pretty ignorant as well. how much do you even know about my country? do you only know what your media has told you? i'm not saying american media isn't biased, i'm saying pretty much ANY media is biased. (i.e. your country doesn't agree with the US, so therefor the media doesn't agree either.)

don't get me wrong, i do think that us attacking Iraq was just G.W. Bush being a war-monger, hoping it would increase his chances of being re-elected. On the other hand though, with how things were going with Iraq, i would have to honestly say that it was just a matter of time.

anyhow... that was waaaaaaaay off topic.
