I am interested in finding out more about this program but I can not read the web site and have not been able to find a babble fish translator that will help. This test was in the news here, CDR's losing data and completely unreadable after 20 months.
The name of the program is not mentioned in this article, i did read another article about this test that mention CD/DVD Diagnostic 2.02 as the software used to test the CDR's.

The life-spend of cd-r's
The cd-r's we burned about two years ago, we tested them again. The results where shocking...
CD-r producers promise ten's of years life-spend, but our test shows differently.
Of the tested brands appear that the cd-r's of (local company) after two years most data was no longer readable.

The article basicaly states that there was a test a while back where they burned data on cd's and stored those cd in their original cases. Years later they decided to retest the disc's and the results where awefull. The cd's were corrupted. This counters the claims of big cd-r production company's that their products will last longer then a decade. This is major proof that cd-r's do not hold up to the company standards. I don't know witch company where tested because you have to read the magazine, the results are published in to get that info...

Hi, Berikco, I downloaded the program you pointed me to (CD/DVD Diagnostic v2.0.2 Build 137) but I have not been able to find the feature that will let you make a graphic representation of the disk errors like the screen shot in the article shows. Maybe I just didn't look hard enough.

In CDR's defense I have several that I just got data off that are about 5 years old. They haven't exactly been treated good either!

well, i had a substantial anime collection on CD's, and recently i got a DVD-RW, so i decided to transfer all of it over to DVD's (being that the 130+ cd's i had could fit on less than 20 DVD's) many of these CD's were over 2 years old, and most of them did read fine, but roughly 10% had at least one corrupted file on it, and 2 of them couldn't be read at all (they locked the drive when i put them in, and i was forced to restart to get the discs out)

i think something equally important as the CD-R media, is the burner used to make the discs. I had an old 8x LiteOn burner for a long time, and i'm relatively certain that only a few of the discs i burned using it were bad, however... later i got a 40x MSI burner, and the discs that i burned with it were many times more likely to be corrupted, even though they were more recent burns.

thinking back... i'm almost regretting getting the 40x burner... not a single time did i EVER botch a cd with my old liteon....

I've got some cds that have fungus on them.... they're almost completly eaten up the silver part!!!

We have a lot of empty pre-printed cd rom's on stock.

I have the feeling even these will burn bad.

We currently had to use x2 to burn data on them.

The oldest cd i've got is one of the firt pirated copies of windows 95, it's almost ten years old...

It was burned in the time a 2x burner costed around 1500€ and a cd went up to 6€....

Shame about the fungus...

My two cents on this matter. The software AND the HARDWARE they used to test the CD is somwhere around 30000 Euro (YES 30K) and it is a bit expensive I think!!

The true story is about that the disk where produced faulty because of the poor workmanship the SILVER layer was eaten so to speak by the used inks on the other side. The side with the pictures (in color).

The technical process is not so easy to explain!! But Thats why on the images YOU can see who sold the disk!! One of the images is from a disk sold by a firm called "KRUIDVAT" roughly something like Boots in the UK!! Other images where from stores like WallMarkt in the US. And note that the images are in MIRROR view!!

I am a subscriptor of the magazine in question it is called PC-Active, it is a good magazine (lol comes with a CD included!!) And yes I can still read those 8 year old CD's (1995 to be precise).
