Shared Hosting & Web Service Question

Post by coder14 »

I've been going through hosting hell this past week with one host suspending my account and another blacklisting my IP.

One claims that I'm overusing the resources for a shared hosting plan, and the other claims that my system is bruteforcing their servers.

The only new thing that I had added is a web service script which looks up a database, make some updates, and return the results. That's all. But the web apps that uses this web service polls it about four times a minute. And at the moment it's just the one development device that's doing that.

Could this be considered an "overload" on a shared hosting plan? Don't e-commerce sites consume much more?

Or could my script somehow be bad that it's failing to free up sql resources or closing connections that could be causing this?

Sorry that this is not really a coding question, but I need some professional advice.

Should I be hosting my apps on such shared hosts or is there something better?

I've been running a Discuz forum with 10,000 members on a cheap($5 per month) shared hosting, I think there're at least over 200 queries per minute, probably your hosting company have very strict rule about thins or you're simply on a very limited hosting server.

Now I have my own server with a medicore 2 core Pentium CPU, the same forum actually use less than 2% of CPU.

If you're running PHP scripts, it should free the resource automatically, but I don't know about other languages like ROR or Node.

If you're gonna try to check the problem, you can install a WAMP/LAMP on your PC and test it out.

After I killed some shared and dedicated plans I went to what is now known as BaaS services that were basically push servers on failover behind a reverse proxy.. I forget the one I used but it used a JS like language to code a push service and API keys.

Now I run x86 proto boards running Debian(where PB needs to run) and Gentoo hardened behind a reverse proxy and firewall appliance using a UPS. It's way cheaper than a dedicated server or decent spec VPS or shared plan..
