A lot of spam-users lately.

I think you have to protect the login against robots better, or are the paid new real spam users

I think this bulletin board is an old version and less savvy at bot detection.

I think it's both bots and spam. In my opinion it would be the best way if a new forum member is only activated after a really qualified posting. If a newbie can't wait 12 hours for his first posting, then the interest in Pb can't be that big.

This! Great idea. And/or maybe they need to answer a simple coding question to join, such as:

What does DBZE mean with regard to 1/0?

Of course anyone who codes will know the answer is "Divide by zero error".

Assign a few active people with limited forum moderator rights of enabling posting rights to a new user. When a new user posts, their posting goes to a queue and the user has to be enabled first to make their posting appear in the forum. Spam bots will never show up with posts again and the additional forum moderators could be limited to that specific right of enabling users to post.

But i dont know if this board supports a "soft" moderation like that.

ps: i know the ins and outs of several CPUs and their exceptions and obviously the devide by zero exception from cpu and language levels, but i never heard the abbreviation DBZE before so i would be out

The only way to block spammers (bot or human) in a forum is to leave new users in manualy approval for a while (A few posts are enough)

This is how most forums work and is the default behavior of phpBB (There is a "New users" group with "need approval posting permission"
After few posts a moderator transform them to an "approved user".

It's a little extra work for the moderators, but much less than having to clean up every day.

Wouldnt SpiderBasic be a way to create a new forum - maybe even with a chat, shared live coding and what not?

So a simple forum software update could solve it.

I prefer a functional simple forum like this one a lot over a fancy dancy super stylish animated flash/java/css+bootstrap forum which lags my machine or cant be displayed with some browsers, anytime. Because i come here for productivity reasons and not entertainment

No need to update: this function has been around since the beginning of phpBB

PB is such a great language so i would favor a environment that may draw in more attention.
I think its important to keep PB alive, therefore attractive.
