crazy game idea (the good kind of crazy?)

I just came up with a crazy game idea, and I'd like some feedback.

A shoot'em up game - downwards scrolling, classic arcade type with lots of weapons and powerups and stuff, all the usual stuff, but ... with levels that generate themselves! Random 3D backgrounds generated on the fly with fractal algorithms and stuff, so that the landscape changes fluidly - attack waves generated on the fly too, by random generators, using sinewaves and other oscillators so that the attack become different every time. Perhaps even with enemy graphics generated on the fly, although I don't know how I could implement this in a way so that the enemies would actually become interesting - the enemy graphics may have to be created in advance, and stuff like the player ship and weapons of course have to be created in advance...

I've always loved the classic kind of shoot'em up where you just have to blast everything away and survive for as long as possible. But the thing is, all of these games get boring in the long run, because you either learn the patterns and locations of all the enemies, or you get tired of starting over all the time and having to play the same level again and again.

But what do you think - is it a good idea or is it just crazy? :)

Check out rRootage for inspiration:

It's a vertical shooter with automatically generated bosses.

Also look at Waring Forever which seems to be the same kind of thing:
