Hide and seek with SMBus controller

I have a HP 620 laptop with windows 7 ultimate. I scan for PCI devices and SMBus controller is absent. If I run a program like cpu-z, the controller is present. If I reboot, the controller is absent again. Also, when I run cpu-z, I see a notification in the right down corner about the successful installation of the SMBus controller driver. What exactly does cpu-z do and reveals SMBus controller?
