I don't know if that's good news or bad?

Depends on whether or not you like GitHub.
If you like GitHub, it is definitely bad news. MS will completely destroy it (like anything else they buy or start on their own) and shut it down within a few years.
RIP GitHub.

For me, considering the past, it's definitively a bad news. When Microsoft buys something, it's not to enhance, but to add crap, to finally destroy the original product and replace it by something not so much enjoyable.

I think it is a good news.
MS had his own VCS... But it wasn't good.
I think, since Nadela is the new boss... MS developes in a bad direction. (Like the linux idea, or stopping a lot of personal-software)

Like SAP...
But SAP sells as his own (SAP BO/BI... HANA)
Or like IBM... But IBM can hardware, but not software...
Or like apple...
Buy it, give it the own name, sell it as a "new" idea... find stupid people who will pay for it. (mostly more)

I always liked the offline git tool with SSH and TLS. A lot better than SVN. I barely used github

And with good reason. Microsoft wrecks everything it touches now.

I know I'm a bit late in this discussion, but for those who still would like to trade GitHub for something else I would like to share my experience with the Git hosting service
https://www.rocketgit.com.
It has all what I was looking for. A very fast service, servers in the EU (Germany) and a no-nonsense interface (eg. no JS). It's completely free, although I couldn't resist to donate. If you don't want to have your code hosted on someone's else servers, this guy offers his software to download for free and install it on your own server (can be done within minutes).
Hopefully this is interesting for some of you.

Yeah, I did find it a funny addition also :)
But I think what he is trying to say that you'll never know when you server is in the hands of a hosting company ....
The last time I checked it's IP 5.9.68.90 is in Germany (AFAIK).
