Tool Trigger Replace FileViewer

I'm not sure how this tool-trigger works?!
I selected "Replace FileViewer - Special File" and set "supported File extensions" to xml.
It doesn't matter, if I just open a xml file, or doubleclick on the internal "explorer tool" on a xml file, it will always be displayed as raw text in the editor and the tool will not be triggered.
What am I doing wrong here?

maybe the extension : you have only to write
xml
with no points or other characters.....

The only way I was able to trigger the executable -> Tools / File Viewer / Open File / ...xml
Everything else doesn't work (anymore?)...

Yes, this seems to be the only way, I hope this is not the "usual" way?
Why not trigger it, when just doing a file/open...?
