It is only a hopefull this.

Some papers are watermarked when purchased. these are used to print images etc. An example of this is postage stamps.

Is it at all possible to detect this watermark from a scan of the printed image. Remember it is the paper that is watermarked not the image.

This depends highly on the reproduction quality of the scanner and not just what is present in the paper. For example, a watermark may be only visible in ultraviolet light but this won't be visible to a normal scanner.
