I hate my CD Rom Drives

I have a great hardware problem and I hope somebody in this forum can help me. I have a DVD-ROM Drive by LiteOn and a CD Burner by Traxdata working in my chest. Now everytime I want to access the Audio CD, the computer suddenly is totally frozen. I can't even move the mouse nor does Crtl+Alt+Del response. All I can do then is restart the computer. This is a very great problem because it is not only the PB lib Audio CD that makes my chest crash, every other programme that only tries to access Audio CD has the same effect. Can anybody help me?

Does this only happen with audio-cds?
Otherwise it might be a bus-mastering problem.
What dma-mode do you run your drives at?

Could even be a broken cable...

Well, all this doesn't help you I guess

DVD Drives are known to hate recorded CD's (CD-R) !

I have problems accessing my backups on the dvd drive, also some original audio cd's don't work properly.

The only solution i've found is to use the burner drive to correctly access the cd's.

Hi!

@merendo: to me it looks like the audio-cd has a copy protection (most computers stall, ´cause they can´t read the toc).
If it has no copy-protection the disc could be damaged!

The problem is not limited to the DVD Drive, the Burner also crashes my chest.

And it doesn't matter if there is an Audio CD (or any other kind of CD or DVD) in the drive, my computer always crashes. It also crashes when I only run a programme which can playback Audio CDs, it crashes when I call InitCDAudio(). So is it possible that the problem is more OS based?

I hope I could explain my problem well, it's quite difficult, I know. But it IS a problem, because I can't play my most favourite (Non PB) games anymore, like the Settlers or K&M.

My OS is Win 98 FE. I have an authentic AMD K6 3D Processor with 256 MB RAM. My DVD Drive works on the IDE 2 Port as Master: LITEON DVD-ROM LTD163D. The Burner works as Slave: IDE-CD R/RW 12x8x32

I hope help is still possible.

I owe ya a crate of beer ;)

I have disabled DMA for the DVD Drive (I had to detach the Burner because it sometimes didn't work and the DVD Drive was unrecognized by the OS) even though it supports DMA and now everything works fine. Thanks again.

I really get help in this forum! I love it.
