Up to now I just have the restricted version of PureBasic but have noticed that when PB is not in use it has a backgound app running. Why exactly is that? Is it passing data from my PC?
I am running the 64bit version on Win10

It's not spying on you, that's for sure. How do you know a background app is running? What is its name?

By background app do you mean the pbcompiler.exe? That's running in memory on standby so that the IDE doesn't have to run/terminate it every time you compile something new. This allows for faster compilation.

William - what do you mean exactly by "not in use"? Do you mean that PB has not been launched? Or do you mean it is running but you are not interacting with it?

Looking at the Processes tab in Windows Task Manager, you should see the following when PB is on screen:
PureBasic.exe
pbcompiler.exe

If you run some code in debug mode, PB creates a tempory exe file:
PureBasic_Compilatation0.exe

It is? When I quit PureBasic, nothing from PureBasic is left running, especially not pbcompiler.exe.

Or maybe I'm misunderstanding what William means by "not in use". I took it as meaning he quit PureBasic. Maybe he's leaving the IDE open?

The pbcompiler.exe process runs in the background along side the IDE. It does not continue running when IDE is exited.

I have 2 PCs with Win10. One on a desktop with Win10 pro 64bit and one on a laptop with Win10 Home 64bit.
The other day on the laptop computer a screen appeared and showed only about seven background apps running, one of which was PureBasic. I hadn't opened PB for maybe a week or so, so it was a puzzle. The largest user of resources was the Epic browser and PB was one of the least.

Since then I have been unable to locate this screen either from TaskManager or and part of System and no sign of PB in either. As we all know, Win10 is a can of worms when it comes to access by MS and others. You have to keep on top of what is switched off and even then it can be impossible to remove or prevent unwanted software from running. Cortana is a good example. You have to be really thorough in Win10 pro and it is impossible in Win10 home to disable and not possible to remove. After every update by MS you have to check just what it may have switched back on again. Some sites I cannot use now because I always have AddBlockers on This sort of intrusion is not for our benefit but simply a means by others to make money. You do have options to switch many off but I wonder how many others are simply hidden. Like the words in the Lennon song - "Strange times indeed" Hence my concern when I saw PB as a background app!

When the particular system screen pops up again, I will make detailed notes and bring this thread up to date with the details.

Most importantly, make sure that you identify the name of the process (pbcompiler.exe, purebasic.exe, etc.).

My guess is that this may have been a PureBasic_Compilatation0.exe or something which was run from the IDE without the debugger attached and did not have an exit condition. If this is the case then it would be a user error.

Did it look like this?

None of those are PureBasic processes.
