Hello,

for my two small robots i need RS232 connections.
But with my laptop x64 win8.1, I do not have any RS232 connectors anymore.
So i like to by the aten usb to serial converter (UC-232C).

Q1) is there someone who used this with PB 5.40Final?
Q2) Is it possible to use these like a RS232 control in PB ?

FTDI chips provide an interface between USB and RS232
Search on "usb to rs232 ftdi" at Amazon.com to see some example products.

The FTDI drivers are easy to install.

You can buy a USB / RS232 converter pen on any electronic shop or in some hardware shops

I use and like the aten converters.
I also use most chipsets and have not had any problems with PB with any make.
Once installed, they all work the same, just like a standard serial port although not all converters have the handshake lines available.

Both FTDI and Prolific have had problems with counterfeit chips.
In both cases, you may end up with a converter that doesn't work with some drivers. Take care if purchasing from low cost online sources.
Even some reputable suppliers have found themselves with the counterfeit chips.

With USB converters, unplugging them while your program has the port open can cause problems.

After trying prolific, and targus converters, who failed both on win8

I just bought an aten usb to serial 232 converter.
And I installed on win 8.1 without any problems.

So, go to test this one with PB.

I have to work a lot with such adaptors

The best working ones use a FTDI chip.
They have also the best working driver.
All (unusal) baudrates are working. (Tested: 7812.5, 10400, 64000)
But maybe you have to set the Delay value to 1ms instead of 16ms which is the default.

For that you have to use the DeviceManager and go to the extended setting section of the driver.

An other posibillity is to use the 'native' way via the FTDI dll.
Advantages:
A customer has not to setup the com ports.
The port is not changing when you plug it into an other USB port.

Also if you want to bitbang data, USB to RS232 might not be the best choice, since USB often is too slow for this (it is often due to one USB package per bitchange). Better buy RS232 extension cards (PCI) then.

I do not know the aten works with a FTDI chip, but this converter works very well.

you are right, but i have a laptop now and is working under win8 - x64,
so I can't use a PCI extention card.

I just bought a usb to centronics converter ...
for using with my old dot matrix printers ... ??
