I remember this happening in previous versions of OSX too, in fact to enable trim on my SSD I had to patch /System/Library/Extensions/IOAHCIFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/IOAHCIBlockStorage.kext/
Contents/MacOS/IOHACIBlockStorage using one of the many utilities doing this for you.

Now, with OS X 10.10 Yosemite, the company has taken another step down the path towards total vendor lock-in and effectively disabled support for third-party SSDs.

We say "effectively" because while third-party SSDs will still work, they'll no longer perform the TRIM garbage collection command.

So basically Apple wants to help shorten the life of (destroy) any third party SSD you insert. This has gone too far...

Ah yes, this is new even if the title of the article is not very well chosen.
Apple simply did not enable trim on the more economical and bigger SSDs you could buy elsewhere BEFORE, now it adds to that the signed driver issue to make it even less easy.

When I was upgrading to OS X Yosemite on my Mac mini 2011, I thought I hit a TRIM problem and sooner or later my SSD would chock. I did some searches and lucky for me, the SSDs I bot are Crucials and they do not require TRIM although it will still be useful. Crucial SSDs has Active Garbage Collection built into the controller. I do not know whether other manufacturers have anything similar. With the TRIM lockout, I won't be surprise all SSD manufacturers will come out with something if they do not already have.

I use TrimEnabler version 3.3, it's free and works nicely on Yosemite.
