Windows XP Upgrades

Some of the most popular antivirus solutions seem to be the free versions of Ad-aware, Avast, AVG, and Avira.
I used to run AVG, but some years back it started to make my system's performance sluggish, so I switched to Avira to regain snappy response.
In addition to having the up to date anti-virus and firewall that Windows Security Center emphasizes,
I've also installed programs such as NoScript, Spybot, and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware to help in defending against cyber intrusions.
The recent expiration of Microsoft support for XP prompted me to find additional tools to plug future vulnerabilities in my family's Windows XP installations.
Here are the four security upgrades that I've recently downloaded for consideration.
Comodo Cleaning Essentials
Comodo Firewall
Comodo Programs Manager
HitmanPro
Comodo Cleaning Essentials is a set of computer security tools designed to help users identify and remove malware and unsafe processes from infected computers.
Comodo Firewall is a full-featured, multilayer firewall application that uses cloud-based data to analyze new programs and data to prevent attacks, including zero-day attacks. It protects your system from viruses, Trojans, worms, hacker attacks, and other threats. Extras include a Geek Buddy subscription, the SecureDNS network, and a speedy, secure Web browser, Comodo Dragon. It is freakin' huge so I've found a considerably smaller, much less bloated, three year old version here. Based on the recent comments at the CNET download site linked above, I'll download the older version and install it only when I hear about Windows XP firewalls being breached.
Comodo Programs Manager organizes your installed programs and system. It monitors and records every change during program installation so it can be totally undone at uninstallation.
• Completely delete partial uninstalls
• Detect and remove unwanted junk files
• Monitor all changes in your system
• Manage Windows features easily
• Restore uninstallations safely
There are more free Windows security goodies at the Comodo site http://www.comodo.com/home/pc-security.php, such as yet another anti-virus solution.
HitmanPro 3.7 - Second Opinion Malware Scanner
from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HitmanPro
Files on the PC are scanned and suspicious files are analyzed in the scan cloud.
Then malicious files are removed from the PC. To speed up the scan time and
to prevent mistakes (false positives), HitmanPro 3 uses a white list that includes
Windows system files and other (safe) files that are present on most PCs.
HitmanPro 3 also requires a license key to remove malware found on a user's computer,
however it does offer a free 30-day trial, which means I'll install this only when I need to use it.
