I decided to install linux on my window8 x64 laptop.
What is the best version of linux to use with PureBasic 5.21 LST ?
Is it ubuntu ?
I see there is v12... and v13...

There is no best
Test some distribution on a virtuell machine and use the best for you.
See for example here: http://distrowatch.com/

I have not seen any distrubution where PB not runs.

My Favorite is Linux Mint 16 (Petra) with Cinnamon, but this is only my Favorite

I like Linux Mint 16 MATE and Xfce.


Try also Sabayon.

Free virtual machine: https://www.virtualbox.org
Just create a new virtual machine without hard disk in virtualbox
and boot some linux ISOs with it for trying.

I would follow the advice about trying some of them in a VM before decide.
Any debian - derived distribution it's easy to setup and use with PB.
I've used Linux Mint MATE x64 and Linux Lite x86 with no problems.
You can also try the bootable cd/dvd of those distributions to check if they look compatible with your hardware out of the box.
You can then try the OS without actually installing it.

Besides the above mentioned, I do have very good experiences with Magiea Linux.
Very userfriendly distribution IMHO.

Yes, Mageia is a very easy "Mausschubser" OS (sorry, can't translate Mausschubser)

It translates like "mouse tossing" OS.
And that's Mageias advantage for people who come from Windows: graphical tools for system administration, which all have a constant look and feel.

For the beginning with Linux is this a good thing, but i have tested mageia 3 (not the new 4) and found a bug
in the GUI for the firewall (all ports closed and nothing works in network, only http), settings in GUI ignored and not
stored. The next think i found, some lib paths not configured in /etc/ld.so.conf.

I agree with you. I started out with Linux/Unix long before I touched PB for the first time. I do have the experience to do everything via command line, but I just do not recommend it 100% to people who touch a linux system for the very first time.

But whatever we suggest to someone, he'll have to find it out himself anyways.

Therefore your tip with distrowatch is absolutely brilliant - I go there quite often to see, what comes up!

edit: just wanted to say, that http://elementaryos.org/ is absolutely appealing - unfortunately they still use the previous Ubuntu kernel which at the moment does not fully support my laptop hardware.

After a long time, i decided to use Linux Mint 17 (Qiana) with Cinnamon for my x64 system
and Linux Mint 13 Xfce for replacements of my older x32 (winXP) systems.

But ??
Will PB5.30 be compatible with this two versions ?
