Seen this hinted a few times over the weekend - but they have not appointed a new CEO yet?

They may as well call their new OS windows 9-2

I have win8 on a few systems, and still have yet to figure out why there is animosity with it. Every iteration has had differences--that is why they give it a new name--but it seems fine to me.

Looking at the headline on the page that luis linked:

I was thinking for a few seconds that it referred to a suite of apps,
but after reading it was apparent that the operating system may well indeed be slated for an undeserved quick death.
Yes it was stupid to release it as a desktop OS, but why kill it for touch tablets?
Stupid move after stupid move after stupid move?
Linux are a great free replacements that should get even better by the time that 9 is ready for release.
It seems that quietly M$ at some point backed off discouraging manufacturers from selling new Windows 7 machines.
I now see them advertised at Micro Center.
I hope that M$ does not perform a mercy killing, rather just create a more rational product line.
Their prime motivation needs to be the delivery of the optimal computing platform, not the maximization of profit.
But that's a pipe dream.

I have win 8.1 now, and it's the best so far, I use the start screen more and more over the desktop, the pc is much faster with 8 than any other Windows, so.. I love it, and I assume 9 will be even better..

I am with you utopiomania, can't see what all the fuss is about, 8.1 is working great for me too.

Even though I'm mostly using my osx and ubuntu partitions, window 8.1 feel pretty good to me too, especially when I got reed of the startscreen and installed a proper start menu (took me like 2 minutes, nothing big when you are installing a new OS). Maybe it's inability to correctly use a retina screen is the only real setback I can see.

How about the inability to work on perfectly good 2007 era hardware?
Windows 7 can work on it, why not 8???
A consumer/business computer OS provides an environment to run application software and hardware.
What can Windows 8 do that is useful for the desktop environment that Windows 7 can't?
The last time I checked, computers were binary digital, on or off.
Oh it can run the latest Direct X and IE all right,
but does Win 8.x introduce something fundamentally new technically for the desktop user?
Or does it represent new in a fluff sense to get your money?
If it is the latter, and I do believe that is the case here,
then the hyping of the fluff is the source of the animosity towards Windows 8.x.
If all of the improvements are hidden from the users and about supporting future standards then they may not appreciated.
Especially as these new standards seem to be about taking control away from the users.

Overall, with the modern interface out of the way, the desktop interface is good - very similar to Win7, perhaps better in some ways. It should run on fairly old hardware, it is not the demanding CPU/GPU hog that the previous flop was (aka Vista).

That hits one of the nails on the head! The security measures are completely OTT and get in the way of productivity. Yet forcing those that want to work 'live' to use their MS Passport to login to their PC is less secure!

In my view, the perception of security risk is itself hyped - maybe one day WikiLeaks will reveal that many of the hyped-up viruses etc are a product of the anti-virus industry........
