I was a windows user until about a year ago and was sorta getting into Power Basic (Bob Zale). Now that I on the Mac platform, I am looking to replace PowerBasic. I like what I am reading about Purebasic. But will I be able to write some code and compile a stand along app that will run under OS x Mavericks?

Yes. PureBasic is the best choice for a BASIC for Mac development and it is the only BASIC for Macs that is actively developed.
