Just wanted to let everyone know that PureBasic now has a LinkedIn group. If you happen to be a member of LinkedIn.com and use PureBasic on a professional level then please feel free to join the group. I will be turning control of the group over to Fred once he accepts the group invitation so the group will ultimately be controlled by the PureBasic team.

I wanted to get this group started for the simple fact that there are a lot of great programmers and application developers that are using PureBasic and thought it was about time we had a place on LinkedIn to show this off. Using PureBasic on a Professional level is nothing to be ashamed of and I for one am proud to be in the group
.

I've been on Linked in for some time but never got really active, count me in as a member of this new group and let's see what interesting things may come out of this initiative.

If you don't already, you need to create an account on LinkedIn.com. once you have an account made, simply search for 'PureBasic' and it should pop up as a group you can join. If you need further assistance please feel free to PM me.

Right now, PureBasic is at best an obscure programming language. It is High quality and extremely versatile but unknown. Being on LinkedIn will bring PB into the public eye (Specifically the eyes of people that make the decisions for companies) , this in turn could allow PB to get used in more main stream business oriented application development which in turn would bring more people to PureBasic as well as probably giving PB developers more access to actual paying jobs in the market place. If Visual Basic can be used as an application development tool for businesses why can’t PureBasic? Simple as that.

Honestly, I don't think you can compare VB to PB for business applications until PB has a truly R.A.D Oriented IDE (or IDE mode).
As far as I can see, that is the number one reason people go with VB. It is quick, it can be done visually, and by people barley able to write an actual program.

PB has come a very long way of course, but it still needs more "shine" before "serious people" outside of Academics, or companies with a shoestring budget actually start using it.
That's not really a slight against PB, but more of a reality of the world.

In my oppinion it's not about ease of use but of the actual ability of the language itself. PB has all the tools it needs to create most any application a person/company could want or need and is multi-platform capable. I don't see any drawbacks too it. Every language can always use a little bit more polish too it and PB is no exception, but as it sits right now PB is a very capable language and needs to get noticed. This might also be a driving force to get the PB Devs to do more to it in the areas it's lacking to be a more main stream language.

Only time will tell that tho.

fsw, that's not far off the truth is it? :) Well it is certainly for people wanting to claw their way up the ladder, thats for sure.

@UUICEO. Having PB or Blitz Basic or any other non-mainstream language in your LinkedIn profile certainly isn't going to make prospective employers jump up and down with excitement, They'll do the same as they always do, yawn and look for somebody with relevant skills to do the job they want done. You can shout till you are blue in the face that PB can do the job better than any other language on the face of the earth, but more often than not they'll tell you "I'd prefer it in VB, C/++, C#, Pascal"... Sometimes, just sometimes, you'll strike it lucky and they don't care what you write something in as long as it works, but that is very very rare. Especially if you leave, die or whatever, cause nobody can just jump in and replace you. There are a handful of PB pros and the rest of us just muddle our way through LOL with a lot of help from the true PB gurus like Srod, Netmaestro, RASHAD etc. So its not like there is a massive pool of people to employ to replace you.

Most people here tinker with the language and have a bit of fun of an evening. A small amount of people will earn a bit of pocket money once in a while from small tools, projects and games. The elite few are probably earning a half decent salary for themselves doing the odd larger project (some in a corporate environment) But you can be certain that they have a lot of skills in other languages and the technical know-how to work around some of PB's limitations.

Don't think that I am saying your idea is bad though... There is nothing wrong with putting PB or any other non-mainstream language in your LinkedIn profile, Just don't make the mistake of thinking a potential Employer/Client is going to care about it. All they care about is making money and being able to maintain/Upgrade/update the software in the future.

Getting the language more mainstream comes down to Fred and Freak at the end of the day... How popular they want the language to be is ultimately their choice.

I totally agree with you LuCiFeR[SD]. I'm not expecting a rush of people to come knocking on my email box with job offers because I have experience with PB. Infact you may be right and it could even be a drawback to me getting other work because I have it listed. But I'll accept it either way and proudly display the PB group. I'm not out to make money on this but to bring light to the PureBasic itself. With any luck, we might get a company to give it a try via having someone develop an application for them using it. Once people get to know it and more people start using it the more acceptable it will become to use as a main stream language. That is ultimatly my goal.
