Canvas gadget as string gadget

Anyone got an example of using a canvasgadget as a replacement string gadaget ??
I can't get my head around handling keyboard events and displaying text.
Any help appreaciated - cos i've had a whole week off and the barin just isn't sychronising with my eys an hands at the moment
