Ubuntu 11.10 - Unity

Hi,

been a long time since I took a look at a Linux distro. Have just fired up my old Vista desktop and set-up a dual boot with Ubuntu 11.10 with the Unity Shell.

First impressions... wow!

Second impression... ah crap, where has everything gone? Where's the package manager and the likes?

A quick question, therefore... should I stick with Unity or install the Gnome Shell? Which one would be easier for a complete Linux ar*e head like myself to get on with? I will really only use Ubuntu to test out some PB code on Linux.

Thanks.

It didnt take too long for me to get used to Unity. But it dont see any advantage for people like us, so you might just switch to something else right away :)

I do like the software manager (or whatever it is called?) though! :)

Customising the damn launcher was a pain... Google to the rescue! :)

I'll give Unity another day to see if I can make head or tail of it!

When I met Unity, it didnt take too long for me to switch from Ubuntu to Linux Mint. :)

don't know about 11.10 I'm still on 11.04 but I got rid of unity real fast
if you can't find CompizConfig Setting Manager type in the terminal ccsm and you can turn unity off in there

That was the first thing I downloaded! :) Mind you I didn't notice an option to turn Unity off. Without a shell what would I be left with exactly?

I can't remember what I did but I don't think you have gnome shell in 11.10

so try

sudo apt-get install gnome-shell

reboot and then you should have a choice at the login to choose Gnome classic

Yes, I was going to do that. Mind you the new software manager lists Gnome anyhow so I might just let the manager download and install it.

Got to say that, well, I likes the look of Ubuntu with Unity. A bit of a shock at first, but it seems to have taken a leaf out of the OSX book! Very easy to use. I know that a lot of the Ubuntu faithful are up in arms about Unity but my first impressions are that I could well work with this. Hell even LibreOffice opens my MS Office documents without a problem! All of my hardware and peripherals are recognised and that represents progress. This wasn't the case the last time I used Ubuntu. :)

Course, the real acid test is whether I can get PB working without any major headaches and with my levels of general incompetence anything is possible!

Ubuntu has come a long way, I didn't mind the Unity interface but it lacked utility compared to Gnome
If all someone wanted to do was emails documents and surf the web it's good but still you need to tweak it a little.
