Wake On IP vs. Wake On Lan

Here's my little question: I am aware of Wake On Lan, but it doesn't exactly fix the problem I am running into. I would like to start up a home server whenever there's something for it to do, yet let it sleep for the rest of the time.
Wake On Lan allows other devices to wake up your server, unfortunately, not all devices (think mediaplayers, network enables tv's, dvd players, etcetera) do not allow sending out a WOL message.
Anybody a suggestion on how to fix this one?
One would almost be tempted to run a second (!) PC (an Atom or something) to generate a WOL event for the first one! Now that can't be the right solution...
But then, what is? Suggestions welcome...
