Looks shite... Seems like it's just like what Apple did with Lion in worse, at least on Lion there's only the optional Launchpad.
Who needs this kind of interface on a computer?

To me Microsoft is just creating more UI inconsistency in its OS.
All Purebasic application looks terrible on Windows 7 when they use a standard menu and toolbar, and I don't blame PB which is using standard controls.

That's exactly what I thought when I saw what Canonical had done to the last version of Ubuntu.

Maybe shite is the new cool and we just don't get it.

I just tried to install it on a VMWare Workstation 6.5.5 virtual machine but it wouldn't install. Apparently you have to have VMWare 7 or 8 to install and run it.

My system at work could run Workstion 8 but it'd be rather slow. The system requirements say that it needs a minimum of a 3 GHz CPU and my system at work has a 2.2 GHz CPU.

I'd consider trying to upgrade to Workstation 7 but I've tried it and even it is a little slow.

I guess I'll just have to pass for now.

I think a new OS should be released every 5 years minimum. Time flies to fast to have to update all the time and go through the horror of a new OS. Until a couple of service packs are released anyway.

I was unable to get it to run on VMWare Workstation 7.1 so I tried the VMWare Workstation 8 evaluation version and it ran fine.
The VMWare 8 Getting Started Guide states :
The host system must have a 64-bit x86 CPU 1.3GHz or faster core speed.
To run 64-bit guest operating systems, the host system must have one of the following processors.
An AMD CPU that has segment-limit support in long mode
An Intel CPU that has VT-x support

if you want to see it in a vmware try to set it like win 7 entreprise settings and fill more ram and much on processor

I downloaded and installed it on another partition along with Windows 7.
I think it is good, it is Windows 7 with a twist.

The most important thing to me is that my legacy VB6 apps is working without any problems even better VB6 IDE is working too so I can maintain my old project when new hardware does not allow XP installation any more in the future (better than VM in my opinion)

I am working hard with PureBasic because I hate .NET and do not want to depend on M$ dev tools which I am sure it will change radically in the near future and all time and money investment will be gone with the wind, exactly the same situation happened to VB6 developers.

I know many people think VB6 is not a true/good programming language but it get the job done and it secured (actually still) a living to me.

I am dreaming of the day that I am totally using PureBasic for all my future projects and praying day and night to keep it like that till the day I die because to be honest I am worry a little bit (I know Fred stated somewhere a relief statement about PB future but I am still worry.Sorry!)

Hmm... Somehow I read that wrong, I'd have sworn it said 3 GHz...

Anyway, I just downloaded the v8 trial, if it runs OK on my system at work, I'll consider upgrading.

Thanks for correcting me, Workstation 8 runs just fine on my system at work.

As for Windows 8, it is definitely designed for pads and tablets. On a desktop that Metro interface would have to go away.

Doesn't matter much to me anyway. Since it's just a redressed Windows 7, I'll stick with XP for now.

Glad you were able to get VMWare 8 to work.

I don't care at all for the Metro inteface, the missing start menu was a deal breaker.
If you Google "windows 8 disable metro interface" it is amazing how many results are availible in such a short time.

I'll bet in the final version Microsoft provides an option to disable Metro or they will find that Windows 8 is just the latest Windows ME!

No, Win7 is a good OS IMO.

The reason for Windows 8, from MS point of view, is to have one single OS for different platforms, using a Win7-like gui on PC, and Metro on tablet and phones. And to reduce memory footprint.
Anyway, is trying to do what Apple did successfully at the right moment (minus the proprietary hardware) with some years of lag.

Windows 7 is a great OS. We are deploying it (next month) at work for enterprise-wide.
