should i finish this game?

I started this project last year and just never got around to finishing it. The game was going to be a skater who skate boards down a road and avoid misc objects. I just wasn't sure if it would be profitable enough to even finish. There's not much to it as of now.

Controls...

ESC - Quits the game
Right Cursor - Moves skater forward
Left Cursor - Makes the skater tail skid to stop
Up Cursor - Moves skater up
Down Cursor - Moves skater down
Spacebar - Makes skater jump
Release Keys - while skater is moving, he'll gradually slow down
G - Shows my layout grid for designing the levels. (Very slow on Mac and doesn't show transparency)
F - Shows the FPS. (Very slow on Mac)

Gamepad/Joystick support on Windows.

WARNING BEFORE DOWNLOADING AND PLAYING
Stop the skater once he gets to the road barriers. Else the game will lock up shortly after that.

DOWNLOAD HERE - Windows and Mac versions in the zip file.

Looks great! I wasn't expecting such cool graphics either. Very nice! I'd say to keep developing it, but I don't play games often enough to pay for it.

You should add some physics stuff (maybe you know the Chipmunk4PB wrapper?)

put some stuff in there! the road blocks only appeared on the sidewalk so I barely saw them... as it is its interesting... you should always finish what you start and if you hate it give it away to get people to buy your better stuff! interesting iconlogo!

Thanks for the feedback guys!

I wasn't going to charge much for it. I was thing a buck or two like they do with iPhone games as that seems to get good response without charging a lot.

All the graphics were completed last year. There's 7 scenes which could make 21 levels if I make them a bit harder each time you play it. Like the first time would be easy, then the second time it would be slightly different and harder and so on with the third time.

I have only read about the Chipmunk wrapper. It would be nice if PB had it's own 2D physics but I guess it's nice that there is at least a wrapper available. I might look into it further.

;)

I also have another game idea which would be something similar to a King's Quest game. Hope you are familiar with that series. But this is what it would look like...

DOWNLOAD HERE

It doesn't have any controls but shows what it may look like.

Very cool skateboard game! It reminds me of Bart's Nightmare on the sega when he's skateboarding around trying to pick up home work!

You have a very cool art style!

I thought the art in the skateboard game were great.

I noticed the trees in the distance seemed to scroll at a rate that makes them seem to travel backwards. That might be appropriate for distance mountains but for the trees it seems a bit weird because their distance isn't very great.

Thanks guys!

I look into the trees. I was just trying to create a depth feeling. ;)

I added a Mac (Intel) version to the zip as well. Fixed the skaters tail skidding so he didn't do it when he was stopped. Added a new icon that fits the game instead of my website logo icon. It auto detects for a joystick and can be used only on Windows. The seems to be an issue using one on Mac. On Windows you can also press "G" for my grid layout and "F" to display FPS.

I guess I will finish this project. You guys gave me the energy I needed to continue with the game, thanks! I hope people will enjoy it when it's done. :D

What do you think of the skaters controls?

Wish I could make graphics that looked even remotely decent like that :|

Interesting looking game though.. But yeah, need to fix the scrolling on those trees in the background.. Otherwise the parallax looks pretty good.

Graphics don't always make the game. I'm sure you can do a fine job at graphics too. And thanks! ;)

You've got my support too... your artwork is fantastic, and the skateboarding game has potential, just needs more content (the biggest hurdle once you've got a game engine running) plus some audio. I think plenty of people would pay a few dollars for it -- just try to make it widely visible once it's finished.

I wish we saw more games made in PB on these forums. I've been working on a platformer game since January, and I am slowly but surely building all the levels... it will (hopefully) become the first game I've finished in a long time (game jams excluded) and probably my most ambitious game ever. (But in order to actually finish it, I chose a minimalist graphics style... if I had graphics as good as yours, it would take me decades!)

Good luck with your game(s), and remember it's perfectly fine to take breaks from projects, you'll come back to them with lots of new ideas.

PS. Here's some game-making inspiration I enjoy:

http://www.screenshotsaturday.com/ - post and view screenshots of anything you're working on
http://www.superfriendshipclub.com/ - a recently created forum specifically for game feedback
http://ludumdare.com/ - a 48-hour game jam/competition (there's one coming up in August - it's fun!)

Thanks kenmo! And thanks for the links. Do you have any screenshots or anything of your game? Would love to see it. ;)
